Glendalough 'Valley of Two Lakes' and St Kevin's Church Monday, 4/19/04 | ||||||||||||||||||||||
Kevin wanted to see his namesake's Church so this was a must see for us. St Kevin's Church is in a beautiful valley with an upper and lower lake. There is a very informative visitor center with displays on St Kevin and the monastic center he founded around 500 A.D. We hiked to 'Kevin's Cell' high on the hillside overlooking Upper Lake. The saint is believed to have lived in a clearing there in the woods and meditated in a tiny cave nearby for several years while the stone church and monastic center were being built. One of the legends about St Kevin is that he was so in communion with nature that he waded into the lake and stood with outstretched arms until birds nested on his open palms! |
