Connemara - Roundstone and Mt Errisbeg         Thursday, 4/22/04
Roundstone is a town on Betraghboy Bay, Connemara. It is noted for traditional Irish music and is home to Roundstone Musical Instruments where Malachy Kearns makes bodhrans (handcrafted drums) and other instruments used in traditional Irish music.  This is one of the Western areas where many still speak Gaelic.

On the Northern outskirts of town is Mt Errisbeg. It is an easy climb to the summit where there are sweeping views of Connemara mountains and lakes, the town of Roundstone and the Bay. For a path we took the advice of a local  shopkeeper to "take a left at O'Dowds Pub and just follow the road to the end."  It sounded much more adventurous than the directions in the guide book. The shopkeeper's approach to the mountain is through a boggy, sheep and cow inhabited pasture. Some of us were somewhat challenged by the passage across the pasture; there were some mucky shoes and cross words, "Lynard, I am going to kill you!".  Nevertheless we all enjoyed the view at the top and after a picnic lunch Kevin and I flew a kite from the top of the mountain.

Close encounter with livestock
On the path to Mt Errisbeg we had a close encounter with the local livestock. For
city folk this was quite startling. The cows weren't happy to see strangers on their path and made an equal effort to keep their  distance. Note Debbie ducking behind Julia after hearing a stories about  'attack  farm animals'.
