The Beara Region      Saturday, 4/24/04
We stayed at the Brook Lodge Hotel in the town of Killarney in County Kerry Friday night. Killarney is a lively town with many pubs, restaurants and several nice hotels.  Saturday morning we drove South along N71 to Glengariff,  then headed west on R372 toward Adrigole on the Bantry Bay. This is a rugged region of mountains and hilly terrain that rises dramatically up from the seas that surround it.
The boundary line between Counties Cork and Kerry is on the Healy Pass thru the Caha Mountains. This was was by far the most challenging and fun driving of the trip. There were many hairpin turns and narrow (one lane) sections of R574. At some points when I met another car one of us had to back up to let the other pass. Fortunately there were few other vehicles on the road. We had chosen Beara over a trip through the more popular Ring of Kerry ('tour bus heaven') and were very happy with our decision.

passed many castle ruins all through the countryside; some were noted in the guidebooks but many, like this one, were not.
