Welcome to Webquest #2:

The Virgin Metaphors

In the novel The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides, we are treated to a plethora of different types of metaphors and symbolism. In this webquest, we will tackle a few major points and ultimately be able to visualize our own images of this work of beauty. Here, we will tackle the following interesting topics:

- What are Fish Flies? How are they important in the story?

- Are Fences really that dangerous? Why do the townspeople remove it?

- How important is the Safety position on the football field? Why is this passage between Trip and Mr. Lisbon one of the most heavily quoted passages in the book?

- What effect will the burning of books (or musical records) have on a child that loves them? Why did Mrs. Lisbon choose this method of punishment?

- Could anyone ever truly save a tree? What was so important about that tree in paticular?

- Why were songs played back and forth over the phone lines? Why are those songs important?

So, buckle up and get ready for a wild ride of information! After the completion of this webquest, you will be able to fully understand the metaphors that Eugenides uses in his novel, as well as a way to portray your own thoughts into beautiful metaphors.
