22/02/03. Amazement. Not expecting to find anything, I trekked off to the local woods. Not really wanting to go out even due to a bad cold but I went anyway. It was one of those times I didn't have a destination in mind but though id search wherever looked interesting. Following the river, I crossed a ford and came to an open patch of ground, full of molehills and cow turd. As good place as any I thought. After 5 mins I got a George V ha-penny, the amazement hadn't even died down when I pulled another from a few metres away. Then a 10p then another, then a 5p. Then a few junk items like foil and egg custard wrappers. This field is in the middle of nowhere, no farms, houses, life for at least a mile so god knows how the coins got there. Anyway pleasantly surprised, I cross the river, this time I have to get my feet wet to get to the opposite bank. I find only a few junk items so cross back, get my feet wetter and trudge back to the car well pleased.

22/02/03. Deja Vu. I found today what i expected to find yesterday. I was searching a couple of fields in the woods, not really expecting much. I didnt get much either. Four pieces of lead, one as large as your hand, a rusted industrial bolt of some kind and an interesting, if worthless decorative finnial off an old gate head.

09/03/03. Warzone. After battling past motorbikes and air rifles, i found a nice quietriverside spot in the woods to search. Dug up an old washer, old nut, modern bottle cap and half a horseshoe. Find of the day though must be thing i dug from 2 and half foot down (Seriously!). I thought it was the top off someones sarnie box or a fishermans bait box. I bagged it anyway. I get home and clean it up, it appears to be copper and is covered in ornate patterns, swirly flowers and vines. It has four hinge points on one side, and a decorative rim on the other. Ill post a picture of it once ive figured out whats wrong with my scanner.

15/03/03. Good old days. Back into a different part of the woods today, tracing the route of my old schools cross country walks and fun runs. It pays being able to remember where we took short rests etc and its on these patches of grass in the woods that i searched. True i only found a couple of ringpulls, a 10p, 5p, 2p, 1p, a nail and a pencil sharpener but the thought that one of those coins could have fallen out of my pocket 6 years ago is interesting.

23/03/03. Back to the warzone. In a vain attempt to find new places in the woods to search I walked over 4 miles, detector in hand throughout. After cut knees and nicks on my hands i climb out of the wilderness and head back the way i came, this time on the proper path. I end up searching one of the meadows in the woods. After three quarters of an hour, i have found an industrial nut / washer, a lump of lead, an iron nail and a bottle top. The bottle top is the spitting image of a gold coin when its in the ground. Im thinking of heading to a park I havent done for next week, just have to consult my permission list before i do.......
