2010 Titans

   4/27/10 - Creston -

Varsity only and Conference match tonight as we welcome to town the Panthers from Creston.  Creston is sitting on an 8-1 record and it will take everything we have tonight to pull this one off.  We talked to them before the game about playing the way we have been practicing the past days, play the easy one, talk, and move around.  It is a boy girl double header and we get the first match for the evening at 5pm.  We start out moving the ball well, under control and moving it around like we talked.  Nineteen and half minutes into the game, Shawn Underwood takes the throw in, sets the ball in the front of the goal and Zach Shea is there to head it into the net.  Nice throw, perfect header and we go up 1-0.  After we score we go away from what was working and forget about the pass, we try to take it up the middle and try to do it alone.  They have a couple of chances but Collin Duffy, Cody Hicks, and Jaden Brouse manage to shut it down.   Then we have a breakdown in the middle, and the ball heads the other way.  They have one player, #3, with skills and speed, this is always a dangerous combination if you are defending it.  This skill and speed manages to go around us once too often and with thirty four seconds in the half they score, 1-1 at the half.  We stress at the half about how important the pass is and how important it is to make it at the right time.  We are doing one, sometimes two to many touches and losing the ball.  Pass the ball quicker, yet slow down the play.  We come out the second half and mine minutes off a corner kick, Roberto Gaytan sends in the ball.  It bounces around off several people, then Miguel Ramos brings it down, touches it over to Zach and Zach puts in his second goal for the night.  2-1.  Then with seventeen minutes left in the game Nolan Gillespie puts the perfect cross ball into the middle and Alex Hillers is there to take advantage of it and puts it away.  3-1.  Now we just need to survive a two point lead and seventeen minutes.    Then nine minutes later #3 is open again and manages to get around our defense and is off to the races.  He scores and our lead is cut again, 3-2.  We hold on the last eight minutes of the game and log another conference win and cherish a big win.   We are young, still learning, and did show some improvement tonight.  We will need to continue to focus on the simple stuff, continue to improve, work hard, and build on our youth.  We have a few days off now as we prepare for another conference match on Saturday as Harlan comes to town.  The match starts at 10am and it will be Varsity first followed by JV.
