Computer as a tool

Compare

Make inferences

Introduction:

Gain attention:

Using LCD projector show three pictures of computing devices used in 3 different time periods;

a) Abacus

b) Military computer

c) PC

Establish instructional purpose; Text – syllabus – online, oral

Activity – Stimulate attention

Students asked to indicate in their note books which ones are computers

Preview lesson

a)       Historical background

b)       Skills expected to learn & use

c)       Lab expectations

Body

Stimulate recall of prior knowledge of abacus.  Use to scaffold new information from text -

Declarative Knowledge (DK) – organized discourse – TM  (Training Method)– Active learning – read (silent) – text to identify background history of each of the above

TM – discussion – of material read –define term computer

Gain & redirect attention to picture previously presented

Elicit response of pre & post answers

Focus on PC’s – learners asked to name components of the computer system in the lab

Conclusion

TM – summary -review historical background of computers, important skills

Enhance transfer – game – daisy chain –

Each learner asked to give 1 historical fact about computers

Re-motivate

Scaffold prior knowledge of skills required to use a computer.

TM –demonstration –procedures - View video on operating a computer –

Starting – booting, using the mouse, point & click, POST test

ACTIVITY: Turn computer on, view screen changes, make mental, note, read lab rules on screen (batch file)

TM: discussion of rules – printed version distributed to all learners with request to add signature to top left corner

ACTIVITY: press enter to change screen – view desktop, focus on overhead, listen to term used to describe GUI

RECALL & USE – knowledge of mouse skills

TM- issue instructions to open browser IE & access course web site & online learning system

TM – independent study – click on current course name & complete tutorial – what is a computer & mouserobics

TM – active learning  - game –a) find the link, -beginner

b) Hallway havoc (intermediate – advanced)

c) Jigsaw puzzle (beginner – advanced)
