Online learning

Major goals

·       Give prospective online instructors an opportunity to experience the virtual classroom from a student’s perspective.

·       Model facilitator skills and technologies that participants will use in their own online courses.

·       Develop a functional understanding of the nature and importance of online learning in the context of contemporary educational offerings.

·       Provide participants with an overview of the key elements of an online course.

·       Discuss the online student’s role and responsibilities in the virtual classroom.

·       Discuss the facilitator’s role in the virtual classroom and identify characteristics of a successful online instructor.

·       Consider strategies to promote communication and collaboration in the virtual classroom.

·       Share ideas about how curriculum can be converted to adapt to the online environment.

·      Discuss some issues surrounding the use of technology in courses and curricula.

·      Introduce faculty to a wide variety of technology tools.

·      Examine example online courses and tools and explore how they enhance or detract from educational objectives.

·      Provide faculty with criteria with which to judge new tools as they emerge.

·      Discuss technology tools from the student’s perspective.

·      Discuss the support of technology tools.

·      Provide an environment where participants can share ideas and experiences related to online student assessment and online education in general.

·      Provide a model for educators who are or will be teaching online, and allow the educator to experience online education from the student's perspective.

  • Assessment is an important tool for obtaining knowledge of how students are performing
  • Using an authentic tool helps to clarify what will be assessed & how it will be assessed

·      Created CAT for my course, use it to collect information from learners

·      Created end of module assessment based on principle of how to word multiple choice answers – i.e. all answers must be possible but only one must be correct

Web design principles

Major goals

The goals of this course are to introduce educators to Web design principles that can be applied to their own course Web pages, to provide guidance on the process of planning the design of Web sites, and to observe good practices of Web design by evaluating other educational Web sites. The course also provides a model for educators who are or will be teaching online, and allows the educator to experience online education from the student's perspective.

  • Beginner – had knowledge of html tags, how to write simple instructions

·      Intermediate – no longer afraid of writing long instructions

·      Can proof & find some bugs
