The LCPA S.A.C. meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by co-chairs Kay Postma and Chris Boman-Swaray. Two open S.A.C. positions needed to be voted on at the meeting.
Principals Report
Corey Scholes - Middle School
Ms. Scholes presented I Thank you certificates to Kay Postma and Constance Thornton for their work on the Title I project. LCPA will receive an additional $30,000 in Title I funds. The Title I committee will reconvene after the funds are received to determine allocation plan.
Ms. Shirley (LCPA Middle School 6th grade) received $1000 from UMKC for a world religions grant. Ms. Shirley was also part of a team that received a $2500 Michael Jordan grant to put a weather station on the roof of the Middle School.
Middle school students raised $168 for the Families of Freedom, a group that provides scholarships to the children of firefighters and police.
The United Way kick off started today at the Middle School with a dance in the gym and games in the cafeteria. The theme was I Be An American and the students did a fabulous job. Several hundred dollars were raised for United Way.
D and F grade slips were sent home today,
Harold Hawkins - High School
Construction update:
-The library is being completely renovated and is scheduled to be complete in late October/early November. Ms. Elaine Neal, LCPA Librarian, has made arrangements with the KCMO public library for students to have access to research materials in the interim. Ms. Neal needs parent volunteers to help prepare the books (labeling and bar-coding) for placement on the shelves. There are 16,000 volumes that will go into the library. Ms. Neal is working on this project 6:50 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily. Any amount of time that can be donated is welcome. Call Ms. Neal at the High School for more details or to volunteer.
-The Middle School has lockers in place. The High School has 397 new lockers on order with an end of October delivery estimation. One week is needed for installation. Lockers available on the 3rd floor have been assigned to students on an absolute-need basis. After a brief discussion it was decided that students would use combination locks on the new lockers, not built-in locks.
-Information in the October 4 KC Star article criticizing the renovation was not accurate. Although the library is not yet complete students currently have internet access on 50 computers throughout the building: room 215 computer lab, senior computer lab and 22 classrooms.
-The band rooms will be available on next Monday, with instruments. There was a misunderstanding between the school and the contractors as to whether the rooms were complete.
-LCPA has a temporary occupancy permit as the building is still under construction. A punch list of repair items will be prepared prior to the school administration getting control of the building. At that time items damaged during construction (i.e. Channel 1 TV1s) and incomplete items can be identified.
-The Middle School will get new windows installed in late spring. We ran out of time to begin and complete that part of the remodeling before school started.
-Exterior doors at that High School will also be done in the late spring for the same reason.
The LINK will be mailed soon and will include an updated schedule of activities. The LINK is mailed to parents every other month. The topic of putting the LINK on the web site or to send it via e-mail to save postage was discussed. Currently there are 200 names on the e-mail list while 1100 student homes receive the LINK. At this time it would be too labor intensive to not send the LINK via mail to the folks who have e-mail.
October 13 is Middle School Appreciation day-both parents and students are invited to the 1st tailgate party at 11:30 a.m. The game starts at 1:00 p.m.
A parent asked about money in the budget to purchase cameras for students to use in the photography class, if the student does not have access to a camera. Because the photography class is an elective supplies like cameras are not in the budget. Soliciting donations of cameras would be a worthwhile project.
The Middle School art teacher requests old acrylic or latex paint donations so that the walls downstairs can be repainted.
Cheryl Baird volunteered to represent LCPA S.A.C. at the D.A.C. meetings. D.A.C. meetings are held the 4th Monday of each month and are open to all parents. Elizabeth volunteered to continue as S.A.C. secretary. All present voted in favor. Cal Allen maintains the e-mail list to LCPA parents.
Information was presented on the following topics:
Title I - Contance Thornton Title I is the largest federally funded program in the nation whose goal is to make sure that every child receives a quality education. The role parents play is to be involved every step of the way. Funds from Title I are used for parent1s workshops and special programs. The Title I meetings are held monthly on the third Thursday. The next meeting is October 18 at 6:30 p.m. at Manual High School. All parents are invited to attend.
LCPA Policies and Code of Conduct - Linda Williams Parents should have seen a copy of the LCPA Code of Conduct by now. It was sent home in September for parents and students to review and sign. A change that occurred this year is in the classes of offenses, there are now 4 classes instead of 5. The absence policy is 24 hours after returning to school the student must give the attendance clerk a note from the parent describing the absence. The note needs to include student name, student number and contact phone number for the parent. Notes to teachers about an absence will not suffice. The attendance clerk must receive the absence note.
Parent/Teacher Conferences - Darrell Strong Middle School parents will meet with the team for Parent/Teacher Conferences. High School parents will meet with individual teachers. Be mindful that you may need to wait a few minutes. If for some reason time runs out please see Mr. Hawkins, Ms. Williams or Mr. Strong to set up a post conference meeting. Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled for November 8, 1:00-7:30 p.m. At the High School parents will pick up report cards on their way in. If you have a specific concern please have your questions ready.
Student Tutoring - Cynthia Black There are a lot of resources for parents at the Parenting Resource Center at 1215 Truman Road. Tutoring is offered Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of each week, 2:30-3:34 p.m. After school buses will transport the student to the elementary school nearest the students1 home. All teachers stay one afternoon per week for tutoring; some stay two. Students sign up in the morning; walk-ins for tutoring are not allowed. Middle school students go to the cafeteria for a snack and the tutoring teachers pick them up from there. A teacher may suggest tutoring is a student is having difficulty with a subject. Students on probation are required to attend tutoring a minimum of two afternoons a week.
Student Mentoring Program - Charlotte Wafer This is the third year for the mentoring program and is designed to foster a positive relationship between students and teachers and allows teachers to help the student focus on areas that need improvement. The students choose their mentor and meets with them on the first Monday of every month. Parents should be getting a call from their child1s mentor in the near future. Students are permitted to switch mentors at the semester break but must speak to the Student Mentoring Coordinator.
Mr. Hawkins reported that Ms. May Washington is the Service Project Coordinator for LCPA. Freshmen are required to complete 125 service hours over 4 years, sophomores 75 hours, juniors 50 hours and seniors 25 hours. Parents will receive more information about this. Students pursuing an IB diploma have additional hours to accumulate; service activities will count for both.
The October 11 skating party needs chaperones; please contact Victoria Armstrong if you can help.
The next S.A.V. meeting is in 2 weeks; Bobbie Radford will contact S.A.V. volunteers to let them know the time and location.
The next Sports Booster meeting will be October 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the ROTC classroom at the High School.
October 18 is the trip to Jefferson City for the accreditation hearing.
The S.A.C. meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Elizabeth Mayer
