S.A.C. co-chair Kay Postma introduced Reginald Taylor, President, National R.T. Coles Alumni Association. Mr. Taylor presented a framed proclamation from Mayor Kay Barnes designating LCPA a historic landmark. Mr. Taylor also received a copy. Many hours of meetings and planning went into the effort to achieve this landmark status. This designation is significant because schools are not typically designated a historic landmark.
Mrs. Martha Brackman Feature Teacher
Mrs. Blackman is the speech/drama teacher; this is her 10th year in the district. The High School debate team went to 14 events this school year, in addition to after-school things. LCPA went to the Midwest Regional Debate Tournament for the 1st time and placed 4th in the novice team division. Next year Kansas City will be hosting this event. The National Urban Debate League needs to expand the number of judges available for tournaments. They will provide training and certification of judges. Mrs. Brackman plans to include forensics next year.
S.A.C. Co-chair Kay Postma gave a special thank-you to the following S.A.C. volunteers: Victoria Armstrong (coordinates the Middle School skating parties), Michael Ashcraft (DAC Secretary), Michael McKelly (provides flyers and announcements for concerts, open house events, etc.), Marvena Howard & Mark Russo (sports boosters, organized 2 banquets this year to recognize athletic students), Cheryl Baird (DAC representative), Elizabeth Mayer (SAC Secretary), Cal Allen (maintained e-mail directory for LCPA), Bobbie Radford (staff appreciation), Constance (Parent Advisory Committee), Elisabetta Kelly (DAC representative), Chris Bomah-Swaray (SAC co-chair).
Everyone gave Kay Postma a big round of applause to say thank you for her past years as SAC co-chair.
Mr. Hawkins introduced Ms. Jones, sponsor of the Student Leadership Council. Ms. Jones reported on the outcome of a meeting the Student Leadership Council had with the LCPA food services manager, Ms. Leach about the food being served in the cafeteria. The students requested a larger selection of salads and vegetables, more fish and less fried foods; bigger variety at breakfast and that food is served hot. Ms. Leach agreed to the students' requests. The students are pleased with the changes and the cafeteria has seen its revenues increase. Access to the vending machines has also been restricted; there are only 2 in the building.
Uniform Update Mr. Hawkins reported that it is an expectation for this fall but that no word has come from Central Office yet.
Mr. Hawkins also reported that Groupwise a district system to contact teachers is now up and running.
Respectfully submitted,
Elizabeth Mayer
