Principal1s Report

Ms. Corey Scholes – Middle School

Two LCPA-Middle School teachers, Ms. Brewer and Ms. Shirley, were recently awarded Kauffman Foundation grants.

The Science Olympiad team has been invited to participate in the Science Olympiad Delaware Invitational on January 24 at the University of Delaware. Title I is funding the trip.

Three LCPA middle school students and one LCPA high school student will attend a conference in Washington, D.C. February 15-20 to learn about community service. Representatives from the Kansas City Missouri Police Department selected the students based on an essay they each wrote. The students will form a council upon their return.

The Middle School library is just about complete; the books just need to go on the shelves. Students will be able to choose from the new books purchased for the library, one of their favorites to put on the shelves on opening day.

The SAT 9 scores are in and will be sent home with report cards.

The District Principals are considering a uniform policy for grades K-8 for all schools. If you have strong feelings one way or another please let the school administration know.

LCPA Middle School received 140 applications as a result of the December 6 open house. Ms. Scholes has been invited by the Brookside Day School to do a recruiting presentation.

February 12 is a Title I parent/child event, the topic is the upcoming MAP tests.

February 14, 1:00 p.m. is the Black History Program featuring a guest speaker.

Ms. Linda Williams – High School

The Martin Luther King essay contest award breakfast is January 12 at 8:30 a.m. LCPA High School had award recipients from the 10th and 12th grades and the Middle School from the 6th and 7th grades.

The quarterly assessment tests (post tests) are finishing up this week; the pre-tests from 2nd semester will start in 2 weeks. Revisions to the tests are being made based on feedback from the post tests.

The computer installation is nearly complete in the library; some more wiring needs to be completed. The lockers are in but with a glitch in the numbering system-the new lockers did not arrive with sequentially numbered labels. As soon as the re-numbering is complete lockers will be assigned to the students by their first hour teacher, hopefully by next week. Combination locks will be used.

The High School can now host home games for basketball events, something we have not been able to do in a long time.

The December open houses prior to the concerts were very well attended and resulted in a number of requests for tours.

Teachers who had less than 50% of their students in steps 1 and 2 of the MAP results will receive a $300 bonus and will be honored by the School Board on January 15. LCPA High School and Middle School teachers will be honored.

Open Discussion

The suggestion has been made that S.A.C. recognize students for their academic, athletic and musical achievements at future S.A.C. meetings. The particulars need to be worked out.

Dr. Taylor recently announced that he is considering changing the bell times for schools. Kay Postma offered to contact the District Administration to find out what ideas they have at this time. NOW is the time for parents and students to give their opinion of changing the start times.

There will be a Community Forum on January 22 at Gladstone Elementary School.

School Board elections will be this spring, watch for upcoming forums to meet the candidates. The March 14 S.A.C. meeting will feature a school board candidate forum hosted by the League of Women Voters.

The next S.A.C. meeting is Thursday, February 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the High School.

Respectfully submitted,

Elizabeth Mayer
S.A.C. Secretary
