LINCOLN COLLEGE PREPARATORY ACADEMY
S.A.C. MINUTES September 7, 2000

S.A.C. Co-chair Kay Postma called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. and introduced Mr. Hawkins, LCPA High School Principal.

Principal's Report - Mr. Harold Hawkins
The High School has 530 students enrolled with three staff vacancies: art teacher, Spanish teacher and debate teacher. A college counselor has joined the LCPA staff this year that plans to organize monthly workshops to talk about college placement and financial aid procedures. Renovation to the North Campus began this summer. The auditorium has received new carpeting, new paint and broken seats have been replaced. Once the tuck-pointing is finished next week repairs to the gymnasium floor will begin. The goal is to have this completed in the next couple of weeks. New motors have been ordered for the air conditioning, which will effect both heating and cooling. These repairs to the heating/cooling system are patchwork as a new heating and cooling system will be installed next summer. The Maintenance Department has agreed to look at resurfacing the steps and sidewalk at the North Campus. Mr. Hawkins hopes this will happen, as the steps are uneven; repairing the steps would also improve the appearance of the front of the building.

There will be an Open House at 6:30 p.m. on September 19 at the Middle School and September 21 at the High School. This will be an opportunity to share information with parents and visit teachers and classrooms.

MAP scores are now available. Improvement was shown in all 10th and 11th grade categories except science. A process has been put in place to identify the weak areas in the science curriculum so that this area can be improved.

Associate Principal's Report - Ms. Corey Scholes
Ms. Scholes reported that 486 students are enrolled at the Middle School. There are two staff vacancies: Spanish teacher and a clerk. A frequent question since the beginning of school has been about the hiring of Associate Teachers at LCPA-although there are a lot of new teachers are getting the support needed two observations by the administration have occurred so that areas that need help can be identified now, instead of problems arising several months into the semester.

Ms. Scholes introduced the two Middle School Vice Principals: Cynthia Black and Charlotte Wafer.

A summary of the MAP scores for 7th and 8th grade was distributed. Students scored higher in all categories(science, math, communication arts and social studies) than the average state scores. Previously exceptional education students' scores were not counted in the MAP score data. Beginning this year those scores will be counted in.

Most of the renovation to the Middle school will take place next year and will include air conditioning, new windows and blinds throughout the building, a larger library and music room, better acoustics for the auditorium. The plans are still in the review process, as soon as they are approved Ms. Scholes will make them available to interested parents for review. A new roof is being put on this week and Ms. Scholes reported working out a deal with the roofers will work 5:00-7:00 p.m on the loud stuff and 7:00-3:39 a.m. on the tarring.

General Questions
How many students were enrolled at the Middle School last year?
539(554 at the High School)
What percentage of 8th grade students did not go to the High School?
A breakdown by grade is not available, however, 75 students were demitted at the end of the year.
Where do the 6th graders come from?
Most come from public schools. Volker, Marlboorough and Bryant were the schools with the most students entering 6th grade.
How many 10th, 11th, and 12th graders enrolled but did not come from Lincoln?
Not that many, perhaps, 40. Most were transfer students from out of town. It is difficult to enroll at Lincoln in 11th or 12th grade because of the number of credits, etc required to graduate.
Uniforms?
The uniform policy is a district decision. Each year an additional grade(Kindergarten and preschool started this year) will be required to abide by uniform guidelines. This will not effect the middle school until 2006. Schools could voluntarily go to the uniform rule, however, the Middle School and High School did not choose to do this.
How has the parking lot safety been so far?
Mr. Hawkins reported that until today everything was going well - today there was an accident. A 4th security officer will be in place next week and will be assigned to monitor the parking lot in the morning and afternooon. Generally the High School is the first to lose an officer if another school has an absence. Part of the renovation next year will include parking lot expansion although being stricter with the students may also have to happen in order to reinforce safe driving.

Regarding district policies Mr. Hawkins reported a new district requirement for the Middle and High School students to wear photo I.D. badges(most likely worn on a lanyard). These badges will serve no other purpose besides identification right now but eventually their use might include library checkout, lunch, and access to activities.

Mr. Hawkins also reported that the district is discussing the placement of police officers in secondary schools for security purposes. This idea was presented to the School Board last week but was pulled from the agenda to go back to commmittee for more review. This suggestion is still in the proposal stage. Mr. Hawkins feel with four security officers there is not need for police officers and would possibly send the wrong message. In other schools police officers are in place as resource officers, however, that is not the idea that the district is currently proposing.

Staff Appreciation Volunteers-Bobbie Radford
Bobbie reported that volunteers are needed to to put together staff appreciation treats throughout the year to show our support and appreciation of the wonderful job the LCPA staff does. Please contact Bobbie(363-2266)if you are available to help. Bobbie also passed the hat for donations to the SAV fund.

LCPA Marketing & Recruiting - Wanda Taylor
A Marketing & Recruiting Advisory Committee has been established and met for the first time in July todetermine some markieting ideas for LCPA. Some ideas that came out of that meeting included communicating with parents of children who were accepted at LCPA but choose not to attend; exit interviews to determine reasons for leaving LCPA; focus groups; paper surveys, progress reports. In addition three obstacles were identified by the committee that need to be overcome: 1)district regulations that keep the principles from doing what they need to do, 2)difficult to get information from the school and and the district and 3)weak connection with the district's public relations/communications department. The committee has also identified three communication ideas they hope to implement: 1)inform teachers about their role as "marketers" of the district, 2)partner with parents and 3)develop positive talking points about the schools.

Solar Bicycle Race - Mary Rouse
Mary reported that she and Terry Rouse will again be working with the chemistry class on a project to build a solar bike to be entered into the Solar Bicycle Race in Topeka held every spring. This past year was very successful with two bikes entered into the race. Mary is asking for fundraising help in the form of connections with hardware stores or a conjunction with Donahue Recycling who will pay $15 for 1 ton of mixed office paper(no phonebooks or plastic.) Mary proposed that if parents and students got behind the idea we could generate one ton of recycling a week. This is an idea that needs help getting off the ground; Mary is willing to help get it set up but needs help organizing the program. Please contract Mary (561-1458) if you are interested in helping.

The S.A.C. meeting was adjourned at 8:10 p.m. The next S.A.C. meeting is Thursday, October 5 at 6:30 p.m.
