Kitchen, band room and library renovation in the Middle School (hot lunches will be served starting tomorrow.)
Painting through out the buildings
Landscape work to include flowerbeds and sod for the High School.
New lockers -the new lockers have not yet arrived for the High School; the plan is to remove the old, broken ones before installing the new ones. They are predicted to arrive by the end of September. Students will not be assigned lockers until the new ones have been installed.
The Middle School is slated to get new tinted windows but they have not arrived yet.
The High School gym will not be finished until work on the pool is complete because both rooms share the same HVAC system.
Construction is still underway; work is done 3:30-11:30 p.m. every weeknight and will continue until its complete.
As soon as the construction is complete a date will be set for the Open House; a written notice will be sent home.
Mr. Hawkins reported that 109 students graduated from LCPA in spring, 2001. Ten students were also IB graduates.
About 300 students participated in summer school, which was held at the Foreign Language School because of the renovation.
Enrollment for the High School is 533 students; about 100 students over last years number.
LCPA Middle School Corey Scholes
Ms. Scholes reported that 6th grade enrollment at the Middle School is one of the highest is awhile: 6th grade 225 students; 7th grade 180 students; 8th grade 154 students; total enrollment 559 (enrollment was 489 last year.)
Ms. Scholes reported the MAP scores are soon to be released; individual student MAP scores will be sent home by mail.
The tutoring program will begin September 18 with a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday afternoon schedule. Students in steps 1 and 2 of the MAP scores (step 5 is the highest) will be identified to participate in this mandatory program. Bus service will be provided for students participating in the tutoring program. Students will not be dropped off at their regular stop but at the elementary school closest to their home. If you do not live near an elementary school contact Mr. Hawkins or Ms. Scholes to work out transportation.
Middle School students will take the SAT 9 test on September 24.
A big round of applause for Mr. Hawkins and Ms. Scholes for overseeing the renovations all summer, in addition to their summer school duties elsewhere.
A big round of applause to the custodians for working non-stop to have both schools cleaned up and ready to go for the first day of school.
International Baccalaureate & Advanced Placement Program Ms. Neffie Chamas, IB Coordinator Both the IB and Advanced Placement Programs are a lot of extra work but can offer in return a lot of opportunity in college credit and scholarships. The Advanced Placement Program allows a student to receive college credit while in high school. Students take classes in 11th and 12th grade and are tested at the end of each class. The IB Program is an additional diploma that on average can be worth about $22,000 in scholarship money. It is important to check with the college the student is interested in before pursuing the IB diploma; not all colleges offer scholarships to IB diploma candidates. Ms. Chamas can be reached at 418-3014 if more information is needed.
Election of S.A.C. officers
Harold Hawkins moved to amend the S.A.C. bylaws to remove the term limits for the S.A.C. chair. This was seconded by Jackie and approved by all in attendance. Harold Hawkins nominated Kay Postma to the position of S.A.C. co-chair. The motion was seconded and approved by all in attendance. Patty Mansur moved that the vote for the remainder of the S.A.C. officer positions (secretary and D.A.C. representative) be deferred until the October meeting. The motion was seconded and approved by all in attendance.
Staff Appreciation Volunteers Bobbie Radford
The hat was passed to collect donations for the staff appreciation fund. There are 75 staff members between both schools. The Staff Appreciation Volunteers help coordinate staff dinners on parent conference nights as well as provide for seasonal treats.
Parent Activity Committee Victoria Armstrong
Activity cards can be purchased from Ms. Greene. Skating parties are scheduled for 6:30-8:30 p.m. on October 11, February 14 and May 9. Parents are responsible for transportation; younger siblings are welcome.
Sports Boosters Mark Russo
There is a Sports Booster meeting next Tuesday. Topics for the meeting include how to boost attendance at football games a portion of the gate receipts goes into the Sports Booster fund that is used to produce the sports banquets. Also to be discussed is the idea of running the concession stand at the games; currently an outside vendor has the contract. Another idea is to involve the Middle School more in the future. Season passes are available: parent pass $20 and student pass $12. LCPA has 18 sports teams and 3 bands; 3 out of 5 students are involved in an extra curricular activity.
Questions and Answers
A parent expressed an interest in developing a buddy system1 for students who walk home. S.A.C. will look into a sub-committee to get this started-please see Ms. Postma if you are interested in participating.
A parent asked about receiving return calls from teachers. Mr. Hawkins explained the LCPA policy is for teachers to return calls within 24 hours. If that is not occurring please see Mr. Hawkins.
Respectfully submitted,
