Dr. Barnard Taylor, Superintendent opened the meeting with a question and answer session.
How do we hold teachers accountable?
Dr. Barnard responded that there should be a routine way to monitor student achievement that is not punitive.
What are your opinions about site-based management?
Dr. Barnard responded that he has only worked in site-based management
systems and that a site-based system is a good thing as long as there are
parameters and goals. Dr. Barnard feels the KCMSD needs to move in this
direction but that the decentralization of authority makes a lot of people
skittish; it will be a gradual move.
How to assure that the goals of the curriculum will have continuity and
focus.
Dr. Barnard feels that by planning what will happen each quarter, and
developing the sequence of events, the goals of the curriculum can be met.
In addition quality assessments need to be performed and that allowing for creativity and flexibility are also important.
How are the MAP tests graded?
The majority of MAP tests (over 90%) are graded out-of-state by personnel trained by DESE. Only test graders who have been trained by DESE grade the tests. The state of Missouri has a goal of grading at least 10% of the tests within the state, however, it is very difficult to find enough educator willing to take the training and do the grading, therefore the majority of tests are graded out of state.
Dr. Barnard concluded the question and answer session by assuring the audience of parents and staff that he will back to speak to us as often as possible.
Students from the National Academic League gave the audience a demonstration of an NAL competition.
Kay Postma announced on behalf of Bobbie Radford (Staff Appreciation Volunteer) that on May 16 fancy desserts would be prepared for the teachers and staff. Please call Bobbie at 363-2266 if you can help.
A presentation of flowers to Mrs. Postma and Ms. Scholes for their help and support from the Science Olympiad Team. Ms. McCormick reported that the LCPA Science Olympiad team placed 12th at the State Conference, out of 32 schools participating. This was the teams 3rd trip to the State Conference. A number of LCPA students won individual medals too. The Science Olympiad team did a demonstration of the Knowledge Master Bowl.
The Advanced Level French students gave the audience a demonstration of their skills.
The Lincoln Tigers Drill Team performed.
Nomination and election of S.A.C. officers for 2001-2002 was held. Sheila Cooper will be the Secretary for 2001-2002. Volunteers are still needed to fill the position of S.A.C. co-chair(s).
Principals Report
Mr. Harold Hawkins: A special thank you to Mrs. Postma and Ms. Bomah-Swaray for their hard work as S.A.C. co-chairs. Both were presented roses.
Mr. Hawkins reported that the last edition of The Link went out last week.
The renovation of the north and south buildings is scheduled to begin once
classes are concluded. LCPA will again offer summer school; a mailing will be going out in the next 3-5 days detailing the program. The plan is for summer school to be offered at the foreign language middle school; the
renovation construction prevents the LCPA buildings from being used by staff and students. In addition information on pre-enrollment for next year will also be sent home.
When asked about staffing and recruitment Mr. Hawkins reported that he is not anticipating a large loss of teachers; there are a few people leaving because of retirement or reassignment. Active recruiting is underway.
A parent asked about the basketball teams uniforms; Mr. Hawkins reported that when the uniforms recently purchased arrived it was discovered that they were blue and white, not blue and gold. Uniforms of the correct colors have been re-ordered and will be here by November when the season begins.
Ms. Corey Scholes: Ms. Scholes reported that she and the assistant principals have done a lot of recruiting and are very pleased that the enrollment totals for 2001-2002 are 169 (6th grade); 201 (7th grade); 161 98th grade) for a total of 538.
Ms. Scholes reported that there was a small kitchen fire the other day. Mr. Johnson, the cafeteria employee suffered burns on his arm but will be OK. The students have taken up a collection to help him. In addition he received a phone call from Superintendent Barnard.
LCPA middle school is missing 2 math teachers but Ms. Scholes reported that recruitment has been going well. Recently she went to Boston with the Human Resources Department.
The S.A.C. meeting adjourned. Refreshments were served in the main corridor.
Respectfully submitted,
Elizabeth Mayer
S.A.C. Secretary
