LINCOLN COLLEGE PREPARATORY ACADEMY
S.A.C. MINUTES January 4, 2001

The S.A.C. meeting was called to order by co-chair Kay Postma.

Principal1s Report – Ms. Corey Scholes
Ms. Scholes reported that the December Open House/Pot Luck at the Middle School was a huge success, approximately 350 people attended. Ms. Scholes and the LCPA Middle School Assistant Principals visited 30 elementary schools prior to the Open House to generate awareness of LCPA and invite prospective 6th graders to attend. Enrollment at LCPA Middle School is 496; in order to keep the program and staff intact an enrollment of 600 is necessary.

SAT 9 scores were released today and the results indicated that the students are improving in the categories tested: Reading Vocabulary; Reading Composition; Math; Problem Solving and Procedures.

The District Technology Plan, approved in 1999, in now under way and the principals can begin ordering equipment. The ban on placing orders had been issued because of a dispute with a potential vendor during the bidding process. The Technology Plan calls for a computer lab in each school during the first year and teacher technology training the second year.

Principal1s Report – Harold Hawkins
Mr. Hawkins reported that the freshmen class adopted a family before the holiday break and were very successful in gathering donations of clothing, food and Christmas gifts for the family.

LCPA High School collected the largest amount of canned goods for a can drive sponsored by KPRS in November. LCPA gathered 2100 pounds of canned goods (out of a total of 4000 pounds received.) Their biggest competition was Blue Valley High School, which has an enrollment of 2400 students, compared to LCPA with an enrollment of 500. KPRS will host a party for LCPA, which will be later in January.

Seventeen students participated in the Peace Jam Conference (a cultural diversity opportunity) before the holidays. This metro-wide conference included a presentation from a Nobel Peace Prize recipient. An outgrowth of the conference will be a student exchange between Blue Valley High School and LCPA. Several students will spend a day at each other1s school; they will meet later in the semester to compare notes.

Marketing and recruitment efforts are underway to increase the enrollment at LCPA High School to 600. The next S.A.C. meeting will be an Open House/potluck. Kay offered to get information about the S.A.C Open House to the Kansas City Star and the Call.

The Science Olympiad will be on January 27 and the Knowledge Bowl on February 3 (at 9:00 a.m.) The LCPA team (students from both the Middle and High Schools) rank 1st in Kansas City, 2nd in Missouri and 68th in the nation. Yeah!

The Solar Bike Team has begun training as well as the construction of the bike. Recruitment has also begun for volunteers to work on the team. Fundraising through recycling (mixed office paper, newspaper and magazines) is helping fund the Solar Bike Team1s efforts. The recycling bin in located in the North Campus parking lot.

Efforts are underway to revitalize the Debate Team, with a lot of support from the Debate Kansas City program at U.M.K.C.

The North Campus building is having some heating problems that the maintenance department is trying to resolve. They are also looking into whether repairs can be made to the foundation around the swimming pool, in order to re-open the pool. Mr. Hawkins reported that everything seems to be on track for the other renovations scheduled to begin in the spring i.e. parking lot, practice field, new doors and new front steps. In addition the library will be relocated to the first floor and the art room to the pod. Summer school will be offered, however details need to be worked out about where in the building classes will be held.

Open discussion about what kinds of programs/information S.A.C. can offer for the March and April meetings and what kinds of programs S.A.C. could help the schools offer. The following ideas were discussed:

… Presentation from college counselor
… MAP preparation for parents – to give parents an idea of what their children will encounter on the test
… Reception for Honor Roll and academic achievement students and their parents.
… Pep rally for academic achievement, after the Honor Roll is announced.

Respectfully submitted,

Elizabeth Mayer
S.A.C. Secretary
