Task #2
The World of Villanelle

After looking at the map, do you have a better idea why Villanelle calls Venice "the city of mazes?"  Write a poem about not being able to find your way.  Use at least one metaphor and one simile.  You may use one line from the text to start you off if you're stuck.

Write down your response to the photos.  What do you think of Venice so far?

Villanelle refers to the history of her people many times in this chapter.  Read a brief history of Venice (scroll down past the hotel part) and take notes.  Which kind of historical account do you prefer: Villanelle's reports or straightforward facts?  Which do you think is more valuable? Why?  Write at least two full paragraphs.

Carnevale is a very important part of Venetian culture.  Villanelle talks about several occasions being "fancy dress," meaning everyone was dressed in carnevale-style costumes.  This site will give you a bit of background on Carnevale and prepare you for your next assignment.  Click on the mask for the site, then write a journal entry from Villanelle's point of view about how Napoleon has affected this celebration.
4
Look at the masks on this site (click the photo, left), and keep in mind that they would be going along with entire costumes (like in the photo).  Design a costume for yourself or a character from a work we've read to wear during Carnevale. The costume, and especially the mask, will contain several symbols of the wearer's personality, fears, and dreams.  You will  have a drawing of the costume and a description of what the symbols are, what they mean, and why you chose them.  Be creative--the symbols you use do not have to be commonplace, as long as you can explain a connection.
