Tower of Faces: Jewish Life Before the Naizs

To fully understand the Holocaust and it's impact, it is helpful to understand what is was like to live as a Jew in Europe before the Nazi's began their program of anti-Semitic programs and, eventually, the genocide of the Jews.

Using the links provided, answer the following questions on your paper. (Note: Be sure to head your paper with the title of this lesson, your name, date, and period. Also, copy all the questions and before you write your answer. Remember be neat and professional in your work.)

Use these photos on the museum website to learn more about what it was like for Jews before the Nazis.Choose 5 photographs answer the following questions for each one.

Letter each photograph (A-E) and write the title of the photograph and under that number and answer the questions in complete sentences.

      1. How many people are in the photo? How many men/women?
      2. Where did they live?
      3. When and where was the photo taken?
      4. What is the profession (job) of the people in the photo?
      5. What are they wearing?
      6. What are the people doing in the photo?
      7. Describe the mood of the people in the photo.
      8. Describe other objects or details you see in the photo.
      9. Describe the setting of the photo (time of day, season, what is in the background, buildings, furniture, etc.)
      10. Summarize your impression of the life of the people in the photograph (remember, these photographs are from the early 1900's, so do not judge them by modern living standards).
