"Peace
in the Streets" by Tom Hayden
As a habit
of good reading, anything you read should inspire you to ask questions.
Based on Tom
Hayden's article, "Peace in the Streets," you are going to go on a
virtual quest to clarify and define references he makes current
and historical events. You will also expand your knowledge
by gathering information about the peacemakers he mentions and by answering
your own questions about his opinions.
Let's get started!
Find the answers
to the following questions by entering the key words provided into google.com
or by clicking on the links in the question (links are words that are underlined
and in purple). Answer all questions in complete sentences. These are short
answer questions, which means that they should be at least a paragraph (3 to
5 unique sentences) each. If you do not have enough information to write that
much, go back and reread the information.
- In the article, it says
25,000 have been killed by gang violence over the past 24 years (which comes
to about 1,041 deaths per year). Compare the number killed by gang warfare
to the number of soldiers killed in the war on Iraq and then to numbers wounded
in the war on Iraq.
To find the answer, go to google.com
and type in "Iraq fatalities." Click on the one of the top links
to find the numbers.
- Based on your answers for
#1, do you think that the violence between gangs should be considered a war,
as Mr. Hayden suggests? Explain your answer in complete sentences.
- Go to Bloods
and Crips Truce Proposal of 1992. Of their seven proposals for education,
choose the three you think are most important. For each of those three, describe
what they proposed. Then, for each one, explain whether or not you think that
goal has been met.
- What is the WTO? Go to www.wto.org
to find out. Look around the site (hint check out links with titles such as
The WTO, Who, What, and the Fact File) and then put into your own words who
they are what they do. Be sure to include what the letters WTO stand for.
- What is CYA? Go to http://www.cya.ca.gov/
to find out. Again, look around then summarize in your own words who they
are and what they do. Be sure to include what the letters CYA stand for.
- In the article, Mr. Hayden
lists several people whom he interviewed for his book Street Wars. Choose
one person he named and search for that person in google. Choose articles
that look professional and credible and write a one paragraph summary of who
that person is and why you would or would not want to find out more about
that person.
