Meet the New Music Professor

By Amanda Griffin
Reporter

Louis Michael is a jazz pianist and a new music professor on campus. He teaches classes in Music Theory and Improvisation. His classes are Music Theory 1-4 and MUSC 131, which introduces music fundamentals.
Michael said, “This class is good for anyone wanting to know more about music and it’s style.” Many of Michael’s students have their own bands and are curious about expanding their knowledge about music. This class will be offered in two sections in the spring semester.
Michael grew up in Columbia, Mo. He began taking piano lessons at age six. In his younger, days he liked listening to rock music more than anything else. Late 70’s rock bands like Kansas and Styx were his favorites.
He even had a band of his own. They didn’t go very far, but they did open for REO Speedwagon.
Michael has also recorded with famous musicians like Dee Murray (the bass player for Elton John) and Dave Hungate from Toto.
Six years ago, Michael returned to school. He earned a Master’s Degree in Jazz Performance at SIUE. There he studied under Reggie Thomas, a very talented jazz musician. He also attended the Berkeley College of Music.
Before coming to LC, Michael taught for two years at SIUE. “Coming to Lewis and Clark has been a great opportunity,” said Michael. “I’m really excited about helping.” He noticed how the faculty at LC are concerned about their students, and he thinks that is “really neat.”
Michael presently plays for many casinos around the area performing solo and sometimes duos or trios. He also plays at big hotels in the St. Louis area, like The Ritz and The Hannigan on the Landing. Every Wed. he plays at the Chase from 6 to 10 pm.
When Michael is not teaching at LC or playing the piano, he teaches private music lessons. He also enjoys woodworking and spending time with his two young children.

Game Reviews and Pie

By Ben Harris
Reporter

My previous review was “over the heads” of some or our readers. I should have explained - I use the “Animal Face” Scale system. The picture of the animal represents, or should represent, a certain emotion.
Happy monkey = good game.
Sad puppy = bad game.
Here are some examples:

Animal Crossing:

As you can plainly see, the monkey is happy.  He is saying, “Why, yes, I enjoy this game.”

Blade II:

This dog is in a state of disarray. He is obviously contemplating suicide after having been exposed to this horrible game. He is saying, “My life is over. Why has God forsaken me?”

Make sense? Great. Glad I could help.
