The Bear

Australian Basketball Trailblazers

The LC men’s basketball team has two new freshmen recruits from Australia. Robbie Aitken is from Melbourne and David Sleight is from Townsville.
Aitken and Sleight were both e-mailed by LC Men’s Head Basketball Coach Doug Stotler to come play after being contacted by an agent.
“I was pretty excited to come to the US to play basketball,” said Sleight.
Sleight is 22 years old. He is a 6’4 Guard/Forward. He started playing basketball at the age of six. After graduating from Pimlico High School, Sleight was a reserve for the Townsville Crocodiles, a professional team in Australia, for four years.
Aitken a 6’7 Forward graduated from high school in Dec. 2000. Then he went to play basketball in the second division of the Australian Basketball Association for the Knox Raiders.
Both Aussies met each other only one week before school started and now are roommates. They have a lot in common. Their favorite thing about the US is all the “lovely women”.
“I hate fast food,” said Aitken. In Australia, they eat more fruits and vegetables.  It is a common Australia opinion that Americans are overweight because we eat too much fast food.
Both are signed to play basketball for the 2002-2003 season and will attend LC for the fall and spring semester.
Aitken and Sleight had each come to the US once before.
When Aitken was 17 he went to Los Angelos, Seattle, Hawaii and Las Vegas. “I loved it.  It was the best time of my life,” said Aitken.
At age 12, Sleight he went to Las Vegas, New York, Orlando and North Carolina where his father lives. “The US is like a totally different world,” said Sleight.  “You drive on the different side of the road.”

“I can’t wait.  I want a white Christmas,” said Aitken.

LC Accepting Nominations for Hall of Fame

LC Press Release

LC is currently accepting nominations again this year for coaches and athletes to be inducted into its newly formed Hall of Fame. |
“The Lewis and Clark Athletics Hall of Fame has been established to recognize some of the truly remarkable and memorable athletes, coaches and teams that have been a part of the outstanding Lewis and Clark Athletic Program,” Vice President of Student Life George Terry said. “Of course we at Lewis and Clark remember certain athletes that made their mark at Lewis and Clark, but we want to make sure that the sports professionals and sports supporters make their nominations for inductions into the Hall of Fame.”
This year a maximum of three individuals will be inducted into the LC Hall of Fame. Nominations for inductees can be made by former players, coaches, college personnel, contributors and supporters of athletics and sports professionals, such as sports writers, photographers and sports editors and directors. Nominations of inductees must be made through the LC Athletics Hall of Fame Nomination Form. Nominations will be accepted until Oct. 15. A selection committee, consisting of college representatives, sports editors and directors and alumni, will vote on and accept this year’s inductees by Feb. 2003, and all of the inductees selected will be honored at the Athletic Banquet during a special ceremony in May 2003.
“A number of representatives of the college and the local sports media have worked hard to create a Hall of Fame, honoring those athletes and coaches from past teams for their hard work and dedication,” Terry said. “The purpose of this organization is to recognize the leadership, character and exceptional contributions that so many Lewis and Clark athletes have shown to their sport and their college. We look forward to honoring those people for their dedication and athleticism, in what may be a long overdue ceremony for some.”
For more information regarding the nomination process and criteria, contact Kathy Schultz in the Athletics Office at (618) 468-6002.
