LC’s Women’s
Volleyball Team has recently acquired a Bethalto athlete to assume
the setting duties for the ‘02 season.
Elysia Perez, a 5’6" setter from Civic Memorial High School, signed
a commitment letter with LC, and will receive a full scholarship.
Perez led the Eagles last season in serving and assists averaging
more than six assists per game with a 99 percent setting accuracy.
Head Coach Ronda Roberts describes Perez as energetic and athletic.
“We are really excited about adding Elysia to this year’s roster.
She has great hands and is extremely aggressive at the net as well.
Her athleticism and energy will make her a great ‘quarterback’ for
the team.”
Roberts said she looks for Perez to make an immediate impact on the
program as Perez will be asked to step up her freshman year to
assume the majority of the setting load. “We have a lot of
confidence that Elysia will be able to step into a leadership role
immediately for us,” Roberts said. “She has great ball control and
has already established a great relationship with our returning
players. She’s a hard worker and finds a way to motivate her players
on the court as well.”
The Volleyball Team has also recently signed a standout hitter from
Collinsville High School for the season.
Karla Ogle, a 5’8" outside hitter from Collinsville signed with LC,
and will also receive a full scholarship. Ogle was a team leader for
the Kahoks as a leading passer and outside hitter.
Coach Roberts is excited about Ogle with the Trailblazers this
season.

“Karla is
just a hustler on the court and a real powerhouse at the net,”
Roberts said. “Even in a scrimmage setting where nothing is on the
line, Karla is always giving 110 percent on the court. She has such
an upbeat attitude off the court, and yet she can be extremely
aggressive on the court.”
Roberts said she looks for Ogle to make an immediate impact on the
program. “Karla is such an intense player, she knows the game well,”
Roberts said. “She’s a smart player with an extremely high skill
level. We look for Karla to work well with our returning players,
and to be a great motivator out on the court.
Ogle and Perez will join returning players Julie Appal, an outside
hitter from Rosary High School in Florissant; Danielle Stewart, a
right side attacker from East Alton-Wood River High School;
Stephanie Wright, an outside hitter and middle hitter from Alton
High School; and Vanessa Hafner, a defensive specialist from Jersey
Community High School.
Roberts said that the
Trailblazers have a number of other recruits lined up for next year,
which will help round out the roster for this fall. “We are
extremely excited about this next season,” Roberts said. “We have
some great recruits and will be adding a lot of height to the
lineup. It’s been a great year for recruiting, which is sure to make
next season successful.” |

In and Beyond the Game
By Joel Jones Reporter
Christina Withers, a
Granite City native and sophomore, plays forward or defense for the LC
Women’s soccer team. Withers was attracted to LC by, “[t]he
soccer program. I liked the soccer program and I like the coach. I like
the school program, the small class size. It’s not like at a big
university where you get lost in the cracks. I like the personal feel.”
Withers was excited
about the soccer team’s upcoming trip to Pensacola, Florida. During
that time they will play Young Harris, a team from Georgia, among other
opponents.
“We’ve been playing
well and we had lots of opportunities, but sometimes it seemed like
there was a force field in the goal,” Withers said in regards to the
team’s first two games, in which they were shutout.” Things have begun
to turn around though. LC won its last game 4-1. Withers was confident
in Coach Rooney’s changes saying, “Christine Coppotelli (Fr, MF,
Collinsville) helped give us a boost in midfield, and Rooney having
Jessica move up top was great. We’ve got good defense and good
goaltending, and we’ve had really productive practices.”
Christina Withers is an exceptionally busy young woman. She works, is
taking 18 credit hours, plays soccer and has a boyfriend. When asked how
she handles such a hectic schedule Withers said, “Time and organization.
