Trailblazers Dominate, End Season with Wins

The LC Trailblazers women’s softball team faced off against Three Rivers Community College in a double header on Tuesday April 30.  It was also Sophomore Day for those who would be playing their last game at LC
Game one was an offensive one for LC, scoring nine runs on seven hits.  LC was able to exploit Three Rivers’  defensive weaknesses.  Sophomore Lindsey Bonnell started the offense early by scoring in the first inning.  She helped her own cause by shutting down Three Rivers’ offense for the first three innings. She retired nine straight batters, striking out two in the process.
LC would add to their lead in the third inning by capitalizing on the sloppy play of the Three Rivers defense. A double followed by a wild pitch, a walk, and a sacrifice fly all led to a 2 run inning for LC.
Bonnell did not give up a hit until the top of the fourth, when she surrendered a double. Eventually there would be two runners on second and third. Bonnell was bailed out of the situation by a heads up play on defense when Kelly Breitwiser gunned down the runner at third to get the final out of the inning. Three Rivers would later score in the fifth to bring the score to 3-1.
In the bottom of the fifth LC exploded scoring five runs on three hits.  After getting two women on, a double by Freshman Amber Hanneken cleared the bases.  The onslaught didn’t stop there. Sophomore Becky Schreiber would send a double to the gap and score an RBI.  A wild pitch would then allow Schreiber to move to third.  Jennifer Mettler finished things off with a two run blast to left field.
Three Rivers was not to be denied forever, scoring all seven of their runs in the last three innings, including a five run seventh. LC was able to hold on for the win.

In between the games a ceremony was held to honor the four graduating sophomores – Shauna Holcmann, Lindsey Bonnell, Becky Schreiber, and Kelly Breitwiser.  They and their parents were called onto the field and were presented with flowers and other gifts from their teammates.

Game two of the double header was all business for LC.  Freshman Tiffany Bennett started this game and was dominant from the start, retiring nine of the first ten batters with skill and precision.  Her defense played excellently behind her, executing plays fluidly.  Once again LC started the offense quickly.  An RBI single by Amber Hanneken scored Shauna Holcmann from second.  It would be the only score LC needed as Bennett pitched a three hit shutout. LC would add two more runs in third inning to bring the final score to 3-0.
