The First Continental Congress
 
-punish Massachusetts to frighten others
-other colonists to take advantage
Committee of Correspondence: a network to keep in touch
-colonists did not take advantage, rallied together,call to meet instead
First Continental Congress:  colonial leaders sending of delegates to Philadelphia
-took moderate position, passed resolutions
-colonial assemblies could raise taxes, no peace time presence of soldiers
-enforce boycott, Loyal Address to King George III
 
Lexington and Concord
 
-no colonial legislature functioning, Martial Law
Patriots:  local groups taking political power
Minute Men: civilian soldier supposed to be ready in a moments notice
Concord:  a town about 15 miles outside Boston were a supply of weapons were stored
Lexington:  Where Sam Adams and other Patriot leaders like Handcock were
-Paul Revere rode to rouse the country side of the coming British.
-confrontation at Lexington 70/700
-a shot was fired, no account
-marched to Concord, occupied the town and destroyed supplies
-Minute Men rapidly gathered and drove back 3 infantry companies
-Smith decided to march back to Boston.
-the Corridor of Hell- snipers all along the way to Boston, citizens joined the battle
 
Breed’s Hill
 
-within 48 hours, 20,000 angry American militiamen gathered
-New Massachusettes provencial Assembly appointed military commanders
-confusion, no order/direction
-only major British force was in Boston/concentrated
-Green Mountain Men captured fort Ticonderoga
-Americans occupied Bunker Hill, high points at Charles Town
-British Ships could shell Boston from this position, needed to cleared
-generals come, Howe a veteran of French and Indian wars in Quebec attacked
-revenge seen by all of Boston, American inexperienced in war
-legend “fire until you see the whites of their eyes….”/ retreat
-failed second attempt, frontal assault backfired/miscalculation of American soldiers
-3rd attempt, line broke through
 
The Revolutionary War: the conflict between the American colonies and Britain
Battle of Bunker Hill: American lost to Gen. Howe who attempted to take 3 times.
