My name is LAURA BROOKS, the daughter of BLAINE MAYNARD and MARILYN HEYDA. I am married to DAVID and have a daughter, BRENNA, and dogs Pepper and Domino. I am an RN and a real estate agent. My hobbies include genealogy, computers, church, reading, and sewing.
My mother was born in Michigan. My father was born in eastern Kentucky. My heritage includes primarily German, English, French-Canadian, and Native American (by rumor) with traces of Irish, French, Swiss, and Dutch. Who knows what else I may find? We're definitely a bunch of "Mixt Nutz"!!! |

My mother's father came to the USA at the age of 17 from Germany, sponsored by an uncle in Detroit. Her mother was French-Canadian and Native American. My father's father was mostly English with rumors of Native American. His mother was German, Irish, Swiss, Dutch, and possibly Native American. If you have done much Appalachian genealogy research, you may have already encountered the problem of Native American or Melungeon heritage. Many people in this area are of mixed descent which cannot be verified because their ancestors carefully covered the tracks. Mixed heritage was concealed through intermarriage, changing names, and moving west to remote areas (like Appalachia) to avoid stigma and prejudice. If an ancestor's roots cannot be traced, they are suspect. Many of these suspect ancestors were women. I have a few of these women in my family tree: JANE YOUNG, SALLY JACKSON, MARGARET JACKSON, NANCY COX. If you have had more success than I have researching these ladies, please email me! |
