The following is some information and links on one of my favorite authors, James White!
James White is best known for his Sector General series about life on a huge hospital space
station with staff and patients from dozens of alien races. These stories are mostly found in
the list of books which follow. However, there are also short story collections which contain
one or more Sector General stories.
Books in the Sector General series are as follows:
Hospital Station (1962)
Star Surgeon (1963)
Major Operation (1971)
Ambulance Ship (1979)
Sector General (1983)
Star Healer (1985)
Code Bule - Emergency (1987)
The Genocidal Healer (1992)
The Galactic Gourmet (1996)
Final Diagnosis (1997)
Mindchanger (1998)
Double Contact (1999)
One of the continual devices which the author uses is the four letter species classification code developed as the series details, to enable "rapid and accurate knowledge of incoming patients". This code is summarized below (adapted from 'Meatball' by James White, found in the book "Major Operation") :
Letter positions:
1st - level of physical evolution ( *not* level of intelligence)
2nd - type and distribution of limbs and sense organs
3rd - metabolism and gravity-pressure requirements
4th - as above in combination with the 3rd letter
First letter assignments:
a - lowest level, generally vegatable intelligences or water breathers
a-c - water breathers
d-f - warm-blooded oxygen breathers (for example earth humans or DBDG)
g-k - oxygen breathing insectile
l-m - light-gravity winged
o-p - chlorine-breathers
q-? - radiation eaters, frigid-blooded, crystaline, poly-morphic, etc...
v - strong esp abilities, without need for appendages
