How does BAD BREATH happen?

The chief cause of odor in the breath is sulfides produced by either gram-negative bacteria or in the normal breakdown and regeneration of your mouth tissues. The degradation end products of this bacterum are methyl mercaptan and hydrogen sulfide gases which produce volatile sulfide compounds or VSC. VSC's are also formed in the normal cellular turnover in the oral environment. When the gums are inflamed or infected a mass of bacteria is present and the normal slow rate of tissue turnover is greatly increased, thereby increasing the amount of VSC present. This leads to a foul odor. The Center For Cosmetic Dentistry has the technology to detect and specifically measure the amount of VSC's in our patients.

Research has shown that these VSC's have a harmful effect on normal gums and periodontal ligaments. VSC's are believed to decrease the integrity of these tissues and allows increased bacterial invasion leading to periodontal breakdown or periodontitis (pyorrhea). Controlling the level of VSC's in the mouth can not only remove mouth odor but may be able to reduce and even stop periodontal disease in its earlier stages.

There are numerous mouthwashes and aides for fighting bad breath. Most of the nationally advertised mouthwashes include a significant amount of  alcohol. Alcohol has a drying effect on oral tissues. Often mouth odors is found to be worst in the morning just after awakening. This is also when the mouth is the driest because normal salivary flow is reduced at night when the body rests. Initially, the high level of alcohol in mouthwashes helps to kill   the bacterial colonies but because of the drying effects, this is only for a brief time. Under the drier conditions, the mouth becomes the perfect        environment for new bacterial growth. The odor returns stronger and worse
than before the mouthwash was used in the first place.

Many patients have described these feelings:

  • Inadequate in public situations at work, at parties or dates.

  • Salesmen have not felt confident and therefore less successful making a sale.

  • Ineffective managers in their jobs because people focus on their breath and not on work.

This therapy save marriages, can be instrumental in getting that second date, and has helped businessmen and women be more relaxed and self-confident. Patients from all over the country seek this specialized therapeutic system because their dentists and doctors do not know how to adequately combat this problem. Often the advise or treatment that is inadequate and many times costly. Some patients are told by their dentist to just have a cleaning , brush here and floss there. That will not clear up the bad breath.

Patients have gone through sinus operations, tonsillectomies, digestive tract examinations and treatment M.R.I. x-rays etc. Many dentists and physicians explain the problem away saying it is not a serious concern. This leaves the patient even more depressed and they often believe they have run out of options. While we would prefer the halitosis patient to come to Citrus Heights for a certain diagnosis we know that in some instances it is impossible to travel to California. It is now possible to send products and instructions for therapy.

Our product of choice is called OxyFresh and includes a toothpaste, rinse, gel and a patented oral irrigator (beneficial in reducing plaque and reducing bleeding gums. This unfortunately cannot be distributed to our patients at the price we are offering our product), and a patented tongue cleaner, also included is a pack of plaque reducing all natural breath mints for in between meals. The active ingredient in OxyFresh products is chlorine dioxide, the same molecule that makes our drinking water safe. There is also a patented oral irrigator, which can reduce plaque 44% more than any other product on the market. Because bacteria and plaque are the main cause in bad breath it is critical to reduce their buildup in the mouth
