During his ceremonial rite of slaying a dragon to gain rulership over his country, Van suddenly finds himself in a strange land (Earth). As he gets run into by Hitomi a large dragon appears. After chasing the dragon and battling it, Van kills it and removes its heart. Suddenly, him and Hitomi are bathed in a white beam of light and they are pulled into the sky.
Van lost both his parents and when his father died, his older brother Folken went to take the ceremonial rite of kingship - to slay a dragon and retrieve its heart (called an energist). Folken disappeared and there were rumours that he had run away. The only friend Van had was a catgirl named Merle, whom he had known since they were very young. With the arrival of Hitomi, he views her only as a hindrance as he must protect her. Even with the battle raging outside his palace, Hitomi remains safe. But, with her fortune-telling abilities, she becomes a great asset to him.
Van has never shown his feelings and believes he can do everything himself. Although he starts off as inexperienced, Van develops a lot during the series. He has to deal with the destruction of his country and the death of his friends. With the disappearance of his brother, he must prove his worth. It takes him awhile to consider Hitomi's feelings but until then, he only wants to use the power she can offer. With Hitomi, he learns about himself. As he gets closer to Hitomi, he begins to understand the true power of Escaflowne.
Being young and having his country destroyed, Van thrusts himself into the front lines of the war against the Zaibach Empire. He lacks formality and experience in fighting, but that does not stop him visiting the various countries to warn them of the impending attack. When he finds out what has happened to his brother, his world is turned upside down. It gets even harder when Dornkirk shows an interest in Hitomi and tries to capture Escaflowne and Hitomi every chance they get.
Van is kind to strangers and has a broad, strong heart. He also can't stand the fact that others suffer instead of him, and try to set things right! He is very honorable when it comes to duty and very sweet when it comes to love.
