The Story

The Lord of the Rings is an epic trilogy, written by J.R.R. Tolkien. It tells the story of the war of the ring and the quest to save Middle-Earth. Full of adventure, excitement, danger and bravery, it has been enjoyed by the young and old, male and female.

The Hobbit Frodo Bagins has come into posession of the One Ring, of the dark lord Sauron. Now, along with his gardener Samwise Gamgee, and cousins Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took, he is off to Bree to meet the Wizard Gandalf. But things don't turn out as planned and they set off to the House of Elrond in Imladris, with the strange Ranger, known as Strider. On the way, they are plauged by the Nazgul, and Frodo is stabbeud by a morgul blade. He is rescued by the elf Glorfindel and taken to Lord Elrond, who treats his poisoning.

There takes place the Council of Elrond, in which it is decided that the One Ring must be destroyed. Frodo valiantly takes on this mighty task, and 8 compainions are chosen to go with him. They are called The Fellowship of the Ring. In the Fellowship is, a dwarf, Gimli son of Gloin, an elf, Legolas of Mirkwood, and two men, Aragorn son of Arathorn and Boromir of Gondor. Also along for the journey are Frodo's original compainions, Sam, Merry and Pippin and leading the way is the Wizard Gandalf.

They set off and along the way, encounter many dangers. Gandalf is lost in Moria, when he fights the ancient Balrog. And Boromir becomes seduced by the power of the ring and is killed by Uruk-Hai after they leave Lothlorien. Merry and Pippin are caputred by Urak-Hai and Frodo and Sam set off for Mordor. This is when the breaking of the Fellowship occurs and sets the path for their seperate journeys.

Now depending on wether you go by the book or the movies there is where you get contradictions. I'll go along with the movie just because I know a lot of people haven't read the book. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli are tracking the Uruk-Hai across the plains and into Rohan hoping to rescue Merry and Pippin. And Sam and Frodo are lost in the maze of Emym Muil. In the city Edoras, the King Theoden's mind has been overtaken by the dark wizard Saruman. His minion Wormtongue pretty much has control over the king and influcences him into doing what he wants.

Wormtongue has the king's nephew, Eomer, banished and there in the plains of Rohan, do Eomer and his followers come across Aragorn, Leoglas, and Gimli. They inform them that the Uruk-Hai they slaughted in the night and, with two horses in sympathy for the thought fallen comrades, they set off toward the edges of Fangorn Forest.

Meanwhile, in Emyn Muil, Frodo and Sam are being trailed by the creature Gollum, who attacks them and tries to take the ring. In return for letting him live, he agrees to lead them to the Black Gate. But once they arrive, they realize they will not be able to penetrate the guards around the entrance to Mordor. So they take a different route that leads them through Ithilien, and they the hobbits get captured by the captain of Gondor, Faramir, Boromir's younger brother.

Inside of Fangorn Forest, while not finding the two hobbits, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli encounter The White Wizard. Who, in all actuallity, is Gandalf, sent back after his fight with the balrog. With all haste they make their way back to the city of Edoras, where Gandalf frees King Theoden, from Saruman's hold. Expecting an attack, they people flee the city to the safety of Helm's Deep. There an great battle insues, where a victory comes with the help of the elves of Lothlorien.

Back in Ithilien, Frodo and Sam are taken to the cave of Henneth Anen, behind a waterfall. Faramir learns of Frodo's possesion of the One Ring, and decides it will go to Gondor. They travel to the city of Osgiliath where an orc attack is occuring. Only then does Faramir decide to let Frodo continue on his quest to destroy the ring. And Gollum conjures up a plan to kill the hobbits by way of the giant spider Shelob.

Merry and Pippin, having been rescued by the Ent Treebeard, go to a council of the Ents and attempt to sway them join the fight for Middle-Earth. They don't listen to the young hobbits and take no action. But when Treebeard sees the destruction Saruman has caused, he calls for the Ents and they sack Isengard, release the river flooding the entire place, and take control of it.
