"Sometimes we get ourselves into situations where we just have to make the best of things". Most of the time, I try to put those instances into poetry. THIS is one of those instances."

He was going hunting, With the guys for "bonding time", I kept nagging, "Let me go!" Until he finally said, "Well...FINE!!"
I'd never shot a gun, I'd never climbed a tree, My idea of camping was... A warm, comfortable R.V.
The first night was the worst, We camped out on the ground, I heard the guys say, "she's soft"! So I never made a sound.
The next morning seemed brighter, Mounting my stand up in the trees, But just as hubby was about to shoot, Guess who had to sneeze?
His big buck sniffed and bolted, Hubby was less than pleased, He quickly sent me back to camp, Where I could cough and wheeze.
Next morning, when I got up, Before the dawn was breaking, I planned to try it on my own, Although my knees were shaking.
I climbed up in the stand, As quiet as could be, And shortly a big white-tailed buck, Was walking straight toward me.
Trembling and quivering, I was scared half to death, I found it hard to aim my gun... and hard to take a breath. My heart was wildly pounding, Beating at a furious rate, I took my aim, pulled the trigger, Bringing down the "points of eight".
I strutted into camp, Anxious to tell my tale, But instead of great excitement, Their faces turned pale.
Throughout our camping trip, The men seemed to have no luck, And it was only I who harvested That single white-tailed buck.
So now I give my hubby space, To do his "hunting thing", For I've achieved my goal, The thrill the hunt can bring.
But next year, the girls and I Plan to take a hunt, But now it is our husbands who Want to fuss, and pout and grunt.
Maybe it's because they remember A time not so far away, When a woman put the guys to shame, And towed "her deer" away.
Nevermind it was my first hunt, Nevermind it was sheer luck, I still smile when I recall My first encounter with a buck. Brenda Ball Copyright © 2003 All Rights Reserved
