One of the main reasons for empty buckets is that many anglers tend to stay in a spot that is not producing.  Maybe you caught one as soon as you got to the spot, or maybe it's just a comfortable place out of the wind.  But when fish don't bite--- MOVE!!!

There are two crappie species, white and black, distinguished by six dorsal fin spines for the white and seven or eight for the black.  Black crappie are clearwater fish;  white crappie tolerate murky waters.  Crappie are sunfish, in the same family as bluegills.

About half a Crappies diet is small fish, so any lure that imitates a small fish is a crappie lure--and the jig imitates not only small fish, but various aquatic insects and crayfish as well.

When fishing for Crappie, jig body color is important.  There are several colors that work, but there are some that are always important to keep on hand.  In the early spring white is a good with a little hot pink or fuchsia.  Any fluorescent color will have value on any given day.  On sunny days always try to use bright colors, green, pearl, or white.  When it is overcast (cloudy) use darker colors.  When night fishing with a jig try to use black.

When Fishing for crappie, always keep your bait or lure moving ever so slightly at all times.  Crappie hit very lightly and have mouths like paper.  Crappie like to play with there food and sometimes if you are not keeping tension on the line a crappie can take the bait.  ALWAYS KEEP THE BAIT OR LURE MOVING---In the winter time try to keep the bait moving.  The slower the better, just do not let it just hang in the water.

Bass Profiles: This will let you know about all the different types of Bass ---
March 17, 2004:

Spring is somewhat here!  Crappie are absolutely unpredictable as always.  Some people at Lay Lake say they are not catching fish and then some are saying they are catching limits.   I am personally, along with my father-in-law,  catching about 7-10 nice fish every time we go out.   My nephew caught 3 nice spotted bass using a cork and minnow off a pier.  One fish weighed at least 2 1/2 lbs.  I will have a picture of it on the bass section shortly.  For anybody wanting to fish Lay Lake,  good luck.   Conditions and elements change everyday.    PLEASE SIGN THE GUEST BOOK AND EMAIL ME WITH ANY COMMENTS!
