Obscurity

Something in your eyes
Is telling me to look closer,
Telling me to finally see
All the hurt that I have caused.
Something in your smile
Is telling me to understand,
Telling me it's not okay
And that your life
Is crashing down.
Something in your touch
Is telling me I failed,
Telling me you cannot live another day
In a world so full of pain.

I never knew I hurt you so bad,
Bad enough to make you cry.
You hid the tears and sorrow
Behind those beautiful eyes;
You hid the shame and regret
From your magnificent smile;
You shielded the pain and misery
Inside your gentle touch.

How was I to know
That I hurt you this much?
How was I to know
Your life was out of control?
How was I to know
When you hid the pain so well?
