Defeating Evil

I met the Devil today.

He smiled, said hello,
And took my hand,
Then led me into Shadowland.
"Beauty is forbidden here,"
he told me with an evil grin
and branded something on my skin.
The pain was instant,
But not unforeseen.
On my hand appeared a thirteen.
I tried to cry, to shed a tear,
And if I did, I don't recall.
All I remember is the long, hard fall.
He peered down at me with empty eyes
As in the darkness I slowly drowned.
"You're lost here, and never found."
He expected me to lose control,
But in the depths of my valiant mind,
I severed the ties meant to bind.
He stared in frozen wonder
As I beat him at his own game
And towered over him while he cowered in shame.
I smiled, said farewell,
And walked away.

The Devil met his match today.
