Product Review on Baby Shampoo
How do the different brands of baby shampoo rate in our hair test? Babies as young as five months to tots as old as three, lather on eight brands.

JAPLO BABY SHAMPOO
(25Oml), $5.90 at all major department stores and shops

TL: Overall, its performance on my baby's hair was okay. Liked the 'press -up' nozzle. But the solution was very soapy and seemed to irritate my baby's eyes. There wasn't much fragrance.

KY: I don't really like the texture and the smell. After I used it, my daughter's hair didn't feel smooth. It was dry and difficult to comb.

SW: I liked the added aloe vera ingredient and the shampoo's fruity fragrance. It left my daughter's hair silky and shiny, and very easy to brush.

EG: I liked the sweet smelling fragrance but it didn't last long. Solution was mild and easy to rinse off.

KODOMO CONDITIONING BABY SHAMPOO
(400ml), $6.90 at supermarkets and major retail outlets

TL: Loved its flowery fragrance. Pump nozzle very convenient. The shampoo was rather soapy but hair felt okay.

KY: Didn't like smell but it was easy to lather and wash off. Good result; hair was soft, smooth and easy to comb. It was easy on the eyes and dispensing was easy.

SW: Was rather soapy, but the V5 and chamomile nourished hair. Hair became softer, shiner and easy to brush. Left refreshing scent too.

EG: Left hair very soft. Had a nice fragrance that lingered even after Terry had sweated . Dispenser is very convenient.

TOLLYJOY TEARLESS BABY SHAMPOO
(250ml), $3.80 at all major departmental stores and supermarkets

TL: Solution was a little thin, which made it difficult to work up a lather. I felt it left my baby's hair quite dry.

KY: I needed to use a lot before I could obtain a lather. I didn't really like the fragrance and the hair wasn't soft, and was difficult to comb.

SW: It had a nice mild fragrance, didn't sting the eyes, and hair was still soft and smooth the next day. But I had to use more to work up the lather.

EG: I didn't like the clinical fragrance. Texture of solution and results were not too good.

MOTHERCARE BABY SHAMPOO
(300ml), $4.50 at Mothercare stores

TL: I think it was too strong. Powdery smell was too strong and not very pleasant. Worked up a good lather though.

KY: Lathered well. Hair felt soft after wash but there seemed to be lots of split ends, which made brushing difficult. It also stung the eyes.

SW: It's good that it's pH balanced. But the fragrance is too strong for children. Hair was manageable and shiny but Mei Li's scalp itched after use, and several strands dropped.

EG: Fragrance was too strong. It lathered well. Seemed more like an adult shampoo.

JOHNSON'S BABY SHAMPOO WITH WHEATGERM
(200ml), $4.50 at all leading supermarkets, pharmacies and retail outlets

TL: Washed off very well and was gentle enough for baby's hair, which felt very nice, and moisturised after wash. The scent was too faint.

KY: I liked the light scent. Solutions texture was just right, but I had to use more to lather. Left hair soft and smooth, and it remained smooth. The No More Tears claim is true. This is No. 1.

SW: The wheatgerm made brushing easier, and the hair was soft and shiny. Pity there wasn't much fragrance.

EG: This had a pleasant fragrance, and solution was the right texture. Lathered well. Hair felt moisturised and soft. Feels like it's made specially for babies.

PIGEON BABY SHAMPOO
(200ml), $3.60 at Takashimaya, Seiyu, Metro, supermarkets and other leading stores

TL: Lathered and washed off well, but hair felt "too squeaky clean". Faint scent. Cap was a bit tight and difficult to open.

KY: Needed to use only a bit for lather. Hair felt soft and easy to comb, fragrance was just right. But unlike Johnson's Wheatgerm, hair didn't look smooth after a while. My children liked the shampoo.

SW: This left hair soft and tangle-free. Smelled nice and fragrance lingered to second day. Nothing did not satisfy.

EG: Light fragrance. Solution was mild and easy to rinse off. Overall performance was average.

JOHNSON'S KIDS TOP-TO-TOE WASH
(300ml), $6.20 at all leading supermarkets, pharmacies and retail outlets

TL: This cap was quite tight and exasperating to open. The solution was difficult to rinse off, and baby's skin and hair felt dry. My  husband and I loved the fragrance. The bottle design made for an easy grip.

KY: Liked the packaging, very fun and hip design. Kids liked the fruity smell. But hair felt rough after wash. Didn't comb as easily.

SW: Can be used for both hair and body. Smelt great, didn't sting eyes and kept hair tangle-free. Great fragrance. Colourful label a packaging plus, but cap is too tight for kid's independent use.

EG:
Has a very strong fruit smell. I wouldn't use it on babies, only older children.

PUREEN BABY SHAMPOO
(350ml), $4 at leading pharmacies, baby boutiques, supermarkets, departmental stores and medical halls

TL: I liked this the best. It had a sweet, fruity scent, which was very nice. Washed off well, wasn't very soapy, and hair felt soft after wash.

KY: My children didn't like it because it stung their eyes. Hair didn't feel soft and was difficult to comb.

SW: I liked its mild fragrance and tearless formula. Hair became soft and silky, but a few strands of hair dropped when I brushed her hair.

EG: This had a clinical fragrance and didn't lather well enough. Overall, just average.
