Breastfeeding Q&A
What are the Types of Milk we make?
Our body makes different ypes of milk to meet our baby's needs.
Types of Milk Period of Secretion Description:
Colostrum late pregnancy until 1st 5 days after delivery thick, yellowish
Transitional betw 5th - 10th day more milky in colour
Mature after the 10th day thinner & whiter
What are the proper ways of breastfeeding?
1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap n water. You only need to clean your nipples and areola at the most, once a day. You can squeeze a bit of the milk out and use it to moisturise your nipple and areola. This will help to soften it.
2. Sit or lie down comfortably. Do not slouch. hold your baby and bring him to your breast. Make sure his head is well supported. There are various positions you can put your body in.
3. Hold your baby with one arm and with the other, cup your breast with your thumb on top and your fingers underneath. Touch your baby's lower lip with your nipple. when he opens his mouth wide, immediately bring him to your breast.
Make sure that your baby's lips cover most of the areola and that his tongue is under your nipple - this is impt to prevent damage to your nipples
4. Let your baby suckle as long as possible on the breast. He should detach himself naturally from the breast when he is satisfied. If you need to detach him, just insert your smallest finger into his mouth and remove him gently from your breast.
5. There is really no need to burp your baby unless he has been crying a lot.
Will I have enough milk?
This question worries many mothers and often makes them afraid of trying. The amount of milk the breasts can produce does not depend on the size of the breasts or even the shape of the nipple. How much milk is produced depends on how you breastfeed - how often and how relaxed you are. You can have enough if you resist the temptation to supplement with formula, have adequate fluids, food and rest, and allow baby to suckle frequently.
How do I know my baby is getting enough?
A baby that has enoughis contented and produces about 6 to 8 wet nappies in 24hrs. If he cries, it could be due to resons other than being hungry, like discomfort or boredom. He also may not suckle if he is not hungry?
How to express your milk?
Expressing milk means taking milk out of the breast artificially by hand or with a breast pump.
You may need to express your milk if:
* Your baby is too premature to suck and needs your milk
* You are planning to go out for the evening
* Your breasts have become engorged or
* You are planning to return to work
By so doing, your milk supply is not reduced and your baby can con't to have the benefit of breast milk
Before you start expressing milk, massage your breast gently to help start the milk flow. Start under your arm and massage in circles all the way around your breast.
Where and How long can I store the breast milk?
Fridge - 48hrs
Freezer - up to 2months
How do I thaw frozen milk?
Let it stand in warm water or put it under running tap water for at least 10mins. Do not boil the milk or heat it in the microwave oven.
