Ryan, Young, Zola to pitch for Red Sox

July 10, 2004

It had been reported by ESPN’s Peter Gammons that a mastersball.com/CnnSI.com writer Todd Zola was involved in a deal including a re-incarnated Cy Young and a young version of Nolan Ryan that sent all three players to Boston. All have been signed to long term deals for the league minimum and large contract escalator clauses. While Young and Ryan are said to have been performing at their career peak abilities, it is not known what part Zola will play on an already stacked Red Sox team. Manager Terry Francona acknowledged, "TZ's a real go to kinda guy. You can start him, you can use him to close games out, even long relief - he really mixes it up out there. Never mind the fact that he can come off the bench and hit you a homer now and again."

The Sox are now the odds-on favorites to win the World Series in both this year and subsequent years up to 2013 according to VegasInsider.com spokesperson Ari Fleischer. "Once this deal went through, the odds for the Sox winning the series this year went from 12-1 all the way to 4-5 and next year its even worse for the bettor, 6-8"

There had been speculation that Cy Young, one of the games greatest all time pitchers, and the all-time Wins leader in a near unbreakable record at 511, would be returned to this mortal coil when a new gene cloning process was perfected from techniques gained during extensive stem-cell research and development. The only real question for baseball insiders was where he would end up. The Red Sox solved that problem.

In a bizarre twist, Cy "Cyclone" Young does not remember his nickname but will only respond to "Denton True," his official given name. Also, Denton True only speaks portuguese despite being born in Ohio and living in the United States his whole life.

Quotes that may or may not be hearsay and conjecture may have been used in this report.
