Destiny
I am captain of my ship; I am the King (Queen) of my castle.
It is human disposition to want to be in control. We feel safe when we know that we have control over things, it gives us a sense of confidence. It would be superlative if we could control everything that goes on. Unfortunately, it is unfeasible for us as human beings to utterly control our lives, our destiny, or our future. Fate, destiny, and circumstance dictate much of what goes on in our lives and there seems to be little space left for our own personal input.
To begin, being captain of a ship implies that you have control over where the ship goes, how it gets there, and what occurs on the ship while it travels to its destination. A king rules in his castle and has complete control over what goes on there. It would be convenient if we could steer our lives in the course that we desire it to go in, as would a captain steer his ship, but that idea seems possible only in fairytales, not in real life. In real life we have laws, norms, and regulations that keep us from being able to have complete control over our lives. A king makes choices and decisions about the affairs of his castle, but we rarely ever have the opportunity to make unrestricted decisions about our lives. Even our future is somewhat predetermined. For instance, a poor man could desire with all of his heart to live in a mansion in California, but the circumstances set before him will never allow him to achieve that unless he worked very hard and even then it would be very unlikely for him to achieve that. Perhaps he was born into poverty, therefore it is not his fault that those circumstances are present in his life.
In addition, all decisions and choices that we make are restricted by something or other. Often times there can be a circumstance that is beyond our control to change. I myself have experienced this. At one point in my life I was in a relationship with someone I had been friends with for a long time. I tried to turn those feelings of friendship into a love that simply could never exist. Why? My heart would never allow it. That person and I simply were not meant to be. I could not control who I fell in love with and as much as I tried it was absolutely out of my hands. What is fascinating is how destiny works, for if I had remained in that relationship and tried to force myself into feeling love that was not there, then I presumably would not be with the person that I am with now. I would have missed the opportunity to be with someone whom I can truly love because I was trying to force something that was never meant to be. I realized that sometimes we need to let destiny take the wheel and steer our ship for us.
In conclusion, as human begins we seek and want dominion and control over all things. At times we need to let go of that need to steer the ship. We need to set those desires aside for our own good. Some people pose the theory that our lives were already planned beforehand and that there in no such thing as free will. We are merely actors in the movies of our lives. Why pray for God to change something in our lives if it is already predestined to happen? Is it all futile, do we really have no say in the affairs of our lives? It would be a morbid existence if we believed that, so perhaps that is why people come up with sayings like, I am captain of my ship; I the am king my castle, but that saying would only be true in a utopian society. Unfortunately we do not live in a utopia, we live in the real world and in the real world no one is captain or king over his or her life. In essence our lives do not even belong to us. |
