Downton is located between the town of Ludlow and the village of Leintwardine, with the village of Bromfield being nearby.
Downton is a large estate and has a large farming and shooting business, including arable and livestock enterprises.
The area is steeped in history: The Downton gorge had many iron works which played an important part in the Industrial Revolution. More on this later. The geology of Downton is most interesting, especially that of the famous Downton Gorge. This is usually open for a day every summer when a walk along a designated route takes place. The tall cliffs are dangerous in places and much of the gorge is private so ventures off paths are not recommended! There are areas where you can use footpaths all year round to see the gorge. There will be maps with these included as this site grows. |
