DEER SEASON 2002
After a dissappointing Bow season, things finally came together for me and several of my family members during Rifle season.
I was on vacation for two weeks during Bow season but spent most of that time trying to get my hunting cabin ready. I'm happy to report that the cabin is about 85% complete with electricity and gas heat.
The few days that I did get to bow hunt were pretty uneventful. I missed a small deer on opening day and that was the only shot that I had. I had one hunt and saw 23 deer and several turkeys but none were in bow range. I'm looking forward to the late Bow season which starts in December.

Doe Day in Washington County, Va.
My day started at 4:00 a.m. I woke up, felt bad and decided to sleep in. I finally got to the mountain at about 7:45 a.m. I hiked in so I would not disturb any hunters, on my way up I saw a friend of mine that owns a cabin near ours, he informed me that one of my brothers had already Killed a deer. As I made my way up to my land I saw another hunter that also told me that my brother had killed a deer, I asked which brother and he told me David and he added that he had made "one hell of a shot" I arrived at the cabin and found my brother finishing up field dressing his deer, a very nice doe. I helped David hang his deer and waited for my brother Jason to return. Jason came in but did not see any deer.
David drives a Mustang, so we loaded his deer in my truck and took it to the checking station, after checking his deer in we picked up my son and returned to the cabin for the evening hunt.
At 2:00p.m. I decided to hit the woods, I knew this was a little early but I wanted to do a little scouting. I went to my favorite hunting spot in the country, not only is it a great spot to hunt but it also offers one of the most spectacular views in the area. The down fall to this hunting spot is that it is straight up. By 2:15 p.m. I was halfway to the top, I stopped to rest and enjoy the view as I was scanning my surroundings and taking in the beauty of the mountains I saw a spike buck and a doe only about thirty yards away. My hunt ended early and back down the mountain I came spike buck in tow. Luckily my brothers and son heard the shot and helped me drag the deer back to the cabin. Four hunters two dead deer and plenty of time left. I took my son to the corner of our property where a large field is located, we watched the woods until the sun got behind the trees and then decided to get up so we could better see the field. As I got up I spotted a deer about 250 yards away, I pointed it out to my son and asked him if he thought he could make the shot. The confidence of a 15 year old. His answer was "oh yeah I've got a good shot". I told him to take his time and shoot when he felt comfortable,I think I was more nervous than he was. He pulled the trigger and his first deer hit the ground like it had been shot with a Howitzer.
Dark fell and still no sign of my youngest brother Jason, we went out looking for him, finally We heard Jason hollering at us from well up the mountain, we could see his flash light and went in his direction. When we reached Jason we discovered that he had also bagged his first deer, the biggest one of the day, a very large doe.
4 for 4 the best day of hunting I've ever had. Not only did I kill a deer but I was able to witness my son Josh kill his first one, help my brother Jason with his first one and help my brother David with his. I don't expect to ever have another day of hunting like this one but I know the memory will be with me forever.
