Anderson According to the 1830 Census, in Buncombe county, NC there was a James Anderson Enumerated adjacent to a James Anderson (precincts 287 and 288) leading to speculation that James B. Anderson might have been the son of James Anderson. James B. Anderson (b. March 17, 1800 Buncombe county, NC d. Oct 1865 Salado (Bell County) TX) M. Caroline Elizabeth Barnard (b. Sept 12, 1806 NC) 10 July 1821 in NC death date unknown but probably before 1877. The Exact burial sites are unknown for both James and Elizabeth, however it is thought by descendants still in the Bell county, TX area that they were buried in the Salado Cemetery near where their Granddaughter Martha Eubanks is buried and a plaque indicating such was erected in July of 2000 in Salado cemetery. Around 1835 James B. and family relocated to Harmony Mission (had a post office from 1838-1839), Van Buren county, MO. Van Buren County was formed in 1835 and was renamed cass county in 1849). Harmony mission (founded as a school for the Osage Indians) was close to Papinsville (now in Bates County). Both James B. Anderson and Nehemiah Beardsley are enumerated in Harmony Mission in the 1840 census. Around 1844/1845 The Family Relocated to Texas with Nehemiah Beardsley allegedly as part of the ill fated Mercer Colony. James is listed in the 1850 Milam County Census living on the North side of the Little River (Bryant Station) in 1850 when Bell county was Organized. According to the "History of Milam County" by Lelia M. Batte (c. 1956, Naylor Company, Austin, TX) James served as Postmaster of Bryant Station from October 21, 1851 to Sept 24, 1852. He purchased on June 8, 1850 for $165.00 8.25 acres of land in what would become the town of Salado from E.S.C. (Elijah Sterling Clack) Robertson. The following described land and premises: "Being Out Lot No. 2 adjoining the Town of Salado and part of a 1280 acre tract of land in the name of H.W. HURD containing eight and one-fourth acres of land." This deed was witnessed by Joseph MILLER and T.T.M. BENNETT, and was filed for Record March 24, 1862. Vol. 1, Page 120. ANDERSON sold various parcels of this Out Lot No. 2 at different times. Some of these were sold to Thomas GRIFFIN, Miles W. ADAMS, Cary G. ADAMS, James MOFFETT, John T. EUBANK and J.P. ARNOLD. (taken from Story of Bell county, Volume 1). James was elected Justice of the Peace in Nolanville (Later Belton - the county seat) in the First election in Bell county which occurred August 5, 1850, and witnessed one of the first deeds recorded in Bell County from Goldsby Childers to Nehemiah Beardsley. He also served as Elder in the Salado Church of Christ, which was organized March 10, 1859. Nothing is known yet of James formal education. We know he could read and write and had some skill in Architecture. Therefore we can safely assume at minimum a basic education. It is also likely that he had a college education. It is my personal impression that he had a love of learning, something which he has passed down to the present generation. James was also a Trustee of Salado College, which was in operation from 1860 until the late 1880's. The Curriculum emphasized mathematics, Latin and literature. Two of the first literary societies in the state of Texas began at Salado College among older students. The Euphradian Society was Organized by Professor James L. Smith, principal of the school. The Amasavourian Society (which means "Love of knowing") was organized in 1868 for young Women at the home of Mrs. ESC Robertson. Among the more notable alumni of Salado college were James Ferguson who attended classes from 1883 - 1886. He later became governor of Texas (his wife was the first female governor of Texas). Andrew Jackson Houston, son of Sam Houston, and George W. Tyler, son of Salado's first mayor and a prominent lawyer and author. The James B. Anderson House in Salado is listed as an historic home in the National Register of Historic Places. It is listed as being built in the Greek Revival Style and as having some sort of commercial enterprise attached to it . It was designed and built by James B. Anderson in 1860 and is located .3 miles n. of the center of town on Main street. What little that is known about the relationship of James B. Anderson and his wife Elizabeth suggest it was a loving partnership and James trusted his wifes judgment in financial matters. What level of education Elizabeth might have attained is not known, however, we can assume she was quite literate and probably well educated for her time. After he passed away in 1865 James' will was probated in 1866. In his will he took great pains to ensure that his wife would retain full control over the estate, mentioning repeatedly that it was his wish that she be able to dispose of it as she sees fit. None of his children are mentioned in the will. Sept 12, 1924 Anderson Carter, b.October 10, 1926 After Graduation From Ad-Ran College in Thorp Springs, TX (the precursor to Texas Christian University) Flue Albert headed west and purchased land in the northeast part of Lubbock county tx. Dec 24.1890, where he was a farmer and sheep rancher there along with George Smith (uncertain which one). It is reported that at the very first Lubbock Town Christmas Party (1891 I would assume), which was held in a blacksmith shop, he sang the bass part in a quartet singing Christmas hymns. According to His sister Effie Anderson Carter, Flue wrote such glowing reports of Lubbock that William B. sold the family farm near Granbury, TX where the family had lived for many years. However, the farm sold so quickly in the fall of 1890 that Williams other business was not yet settled for a move so the family lived in a rough camp during the winter of 1890-91. In 1896 F. A. and Walt Stevenson purchased the mail contract from Lubbock to the Halfway station to Plainview (reported in the Lubbock Press Leader June 27, 1896) F.A. ran for the position in of District and County Clerk in Lubbock county in 1900 according to the May 4, 1900 edition of the Lubbock Avalanche. In the Avalanche, he was described as such: Mr. F.A. Anderson comes before the people as a candidate for the office of county and district clerk of Lubbock and adjoining counties. He is a young man whose character will bear the closest scrutiny and is regarded by all who know him as an affable gentlemen possessing commendable moral qualities, and undoubted ability to fill with credit the office to which he aspires. Flue holds a first grade certificate and has served on several examination boards. He has been a resident of Lubbock county since its organization. Voters will do well to look in to Mr. Andersons race at the coming November Election and give him the consideration his merits or demerits deserve. In 1901 during a smallpox outbreak in Lubbock, the Anderson household was not spared. It is reported that Dr. Pharr, the local health officer, contracted the disease while attending patients in the F.A. Anderson Household. F.A. removed to Portales (Roosevelt County), NM, after 1901 where he also engaged in Ranching. He filed a land patent for 160 acres on 02/24/1908 in roosevelt county under the 1862 Homestead act. In 1923, many ranches went belly up, Flues being one of these. He auctioned off the ranch equipment to finance a move to Graton, Ca (sonoma county). They moved in a stripped down ford truck and a touring car, camping out under the stars at night. Clarence Stevenson (a cousin) drove the truck, Flue Albert drove the touring car (according to Effie Anderson Carter). She attended Harding College in Morrillton, AR from 1927 -1931, Graduating with a degree in English. She was a charter member of Harding College's (now Harding University, which relocated to Searcy, AR in 1934) first social club, WHC. According to Verna, the freshman women got together and formed the club because they feared the upper class women were planning an initiation prank. Verna never wore makeup, just used talcum powder. She told the story that when she was a young woman in the 20's some friends of hers convinced her to try eye shadow and rouge. They went to the county fair that day and she rode the roller coaster. By the time she got off the coaster, her eye shadow was running all the way down her face and she decided make up wasn't for her.
