JAKARTA (JP): The Attorney General's Office (AGO) will assign
20 prosecutors from various parts of the country to handle cases
in the province of Maluku province, according to reports.
The plan is based on an official letter dated May 19 and signed
by the attorney general, the office's spokesman, Barman Zahir,
said on Wednesday as quoted by Antara.
The 20 prosecutors are from East Java, Jakarta, Aceh, Makassar,
Central Java, Riau, Lampung and South Sumatra, and will be
assigned to the Maluku Prosecutor's Office.
Currently, there are only 15 prosecutors in Maluku, far below
the ideal number of 43 prosecutors and 47 administrative staff
members per province.
The Maluku Prosecutor's Office recently announced its decision
to move the trials of the leader of the Maluku Sovereignty Front
and the commander of the Laskar Jihad to Jakarta, citing security
risks and a lack of prosecutors. (edt)
