UN investigator winds up
Indonesia probe
A United Nations investigator
examining Indonesia's legal system has ended a controversial
fact-finding mission to the country, saying corruption is endemic.
But UN special rapporteur Param Cumaraswamy has told journalists
in Jakarta the purpose of his visit was not to criticise the
government, and apologised if that was the impression he gave.
The Malaysian lawyer upset the government during his 10-day visit
after saying Indonesia's legal system was among the worst he had
seen and that Jakarta lacked the political will to implement key
reforms.
Mr Cumaraswamy is due to report his findings to the U.N. Human
Rights Commission next April.
