US to resume training with
Indonesia
Indonesia has welcomed efforts by
the United States congress to restore training funds for its armed
forces
The Senate appropriations committee voted last week to allocate
$US400,000 to resume training with Indonesia under the
international military education and training program.
If passed by the full congress, the committee's bill would
maintain a ban on weapons sales and other military assistance.
Cooperation was sharply reduced in 1999 when congress passed the
so-called Leahy amendment during the Indonesian-backed violence in
East Timor.
Under the Leahy amendment, assistance is suspended until certain
conditions are met, including effective measures to bring to
justice members of the armed forces and militia groups suspected
of rights abuses.
