UN to be told of Indonesia's 'bad' legal system

A United Nations investigator has described Indonesia's legal system as one of the worst he has seen and comparable only to Mexico.

UN special rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, Param Cumaraswamy, was quoted by the Jakarta Post newspaper as saying in an interview: ""I didn't realize that the situation could be as bad as what I've seen."

Mr Cumaraswamy - a Malaysian - is on a 10 day mission to investigate Indonesia's judiciary.

Since he arrived last week he has met several supreme court judges as well as the foreign minister, Hassan Wirayuda.

The rapporteur, who noted a lack of political will to reform the legal system, will report his findings to the next annual meeting of the UN Human Rights Commission in April 2003.
