UN expert says Indonesia's legal
system is corrupt
A United Nations investigator
examining Indonesia's judiciary says the country's legal system is
one of the worst he has seen and will take years to repair and
raise to international standards.
United Nations special rapporteur, Param Cumaraswamy, says
President Megawati Sukarnoputri's government lacks the political
will to root out corruption and implement reforms needed to
reassure foreigners that Indonesia is a safe place to invest.
He says for a country such as Indonesia the situation should never
have been allowed to reach such an extent.
The former commercial lawyer arrived in Jakarta last Monday for a
ten-day fact-finding mission looking into judicial corruption and
the independence of the judiciary.
He is to report his findings to the U-N Human Rights Commission
next April.
