US to restore military aid to
Jakarta
The United States Senate
Appropriations Committee has voted to drop restrictions on
military aid to Indonesia.
The move comes as Washington courts Jakarta as a partner in its
war on terrorism.
The committee's only significant dispute as it disposed of bills
funding much of the U-S government came over whether to provide
more than 700-thousand dollars in military assistance to
Indonesia.
Congress barred Indonesia from an international military training
program over charges of human rights abuses in East Timor by
Indonesia's military.
However, the Bush administration has been pushing to lift the ban
to Indonesia, which is 72 percent Muslim and faces serious threats
from radical groups.
