Car bomb blast targets US diplomats

A vehicle carrying explosives blew up prematurely near a US embassy residence in
the Indonesian capital Jakarta early today, police said.
A police officer at the scene said one man inside the vehicle was killed and a second
was injured in the small blast, which did not cause any substantial damage to nearby
buildings.
Nono Supriyono, chief of the operational command of the Jakarta police force,
confirmed one man inside the car was killed and a second injured.
Police officers at the scene said two other suspects managed to escape after the
blast, which happened at around 3.30am (0630 AEST) in an upscale district in the
centre of Jakarta.
A US State Department official said the residence was unoccupied at the time and
that there was no evidence yet to prove that the building was being targeted.
Jakarta police Chief Anton Bachrul Alam gave a different version of events, saying the
man who died was shot dead by police shortly after the explosion.
Alam said it was too early to know whether the explosion was linked to recent truck
bomb threats against the US embassy in the Indonesian capital. AFP
