14 Australians confirmed dead, 220
still unaccounted for
A man who was critically burned in
the Bali car bombing has died after being evacuated to a Darwin
hospital, bringing the toll of confirmed Australian dead to 14,
officials said.
More than 200 people remained
unaccounted for, the foreign ministry said Monday.
"The man died about 9:00 am
(2330 GMT) in the Royal Darwin Hospital," a hospital
spokesman said.
Another evacuee died aboard an air
force Hercules en route from Bali late Sunday.
About 110 Australians were
hospitalised in Bali after the Saturday night blast, although most
of those had been evacuated by midday Monday.
Scores of other Australians who had
been less severely hurt came home on commercial charter flights.
Prime Minister John Howard said it
could be several days before it was known how many Australians
were among the nearly 190 confirmed dead so far, although he said
the number would be significant.
Many of the dead were burned beyond
recognition and others were torn apart by the force of the car
bomb which targeted two night clubs popular with foreign tourists
at Bali's Kuta beach.
The foreign ministry said 220
Australians were unaccounted for early Monday, but they expected
that number to go down as holidaymakers who were unaffected by the
bombing or survived the blast got in touch with relatives back
home.
