US concerned about unresolved grenade explosion in Jakarta

The United States is urging Indonesian authorities to resolve the uncertainty surrounding a grenade explosion last month near an unoccupied house belonging to the US embassy.

American ambassador Ralph Boyce said after meeting Indonesia's foreign minister Hassan Wirayudha that the US is naturally concerned.

It is the first comment by a US official indicating that the blast, which killed one of the suspected assailants, might have been an attempted attack on American facilities.

The American State Department said after the September 23 blast there was no indication that US Embassy properties were targeted.

Police had earlier said the blast was connected with attempts to collect a debt from the owner of a house two doors from the embassy building, and was not aimed at US facilities.

Jakarta's police chief says his team is having difficulty investigating the blast because a key suspect is refusing to speak.
