Death sentence demanded for Ambon bombings
JAKARTA (JP): Prosecutors on Wednesday demanded the North Jakarta District
Court sentence one man to death and jail another for life for a series of bombings in
Ambon, Maluku.
Prosecutor Fora Noenoe Hitu asked the court to sentence Abraham Tariola and
Andreas Polhaufesy to death and life sentences respectively for the bombing in July,
last year.
"The defendants were found guilty of bombing several places in Ambon," Fora was
quoted by Antara as saying.
Fora said the defendants were involved in installing the bombs, which were used
members of a youth gang to attack Porto and Haria villages in Ambon.
Thousands of people have been killed during violence between Christians and Muslims
in Maluku in the past five years.
Elements of the military and police have reportedly been involved in stoking the fires of
religious hatred, and have hindered attempts to restore peace.
The killings decreased after the government enforced civil law in the area.
