More than 20 passengers feared
dead after boat sinks in Maluku Sea
JAKARTA (AFP): More than 20
unauthorised passengers may have drowned when a cargo boat sank
off Sulawesi island last week, rescuers said Tuesday.
"It's possible there could be
more than 20," a staff member at the search and rescue centre
in Manado, North Sulawesi, told AFP.
He said the boat sank on July 16
but survivors only told rescuers about the unauthorised passengers
last Saturday.
About five people survived the
accident near Mayu Island in the Maluku Sea, halfway between North
Sulawesi and Halmahera island, said the staffer who declined to
give his name.
The KM Supa Dua was carrying
steel and cement for house construction when it went down during a
storm.
A rescue boat was still searching
the area on Tuesday, he said, adding that illegal passengers were
common aboard cargo vessels in the area.
